Report: WWE Planning on Having Roman Reigns Defending Universal Title vs. Rey Mysterio at Hell in a Cell PPV

It appears as though WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns has an opponent for the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view after all. It’s going to be WWE legend and one half of the Smackdown Tag Team Champions, Rey Mysterio. That report comes from the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer. It has not been announced by WWE yet. Hell in a Cell takes place in two weeks on June 20

The end of Smackdown this week saw Roman Reigns attack Rey and his son Dominik Mysterio while they were defending the Smackdown Tag Team Titles against The Usos. Rey was out on the floor while Reigns beat up Dominik a lot with repeated punches, a Guillotine Choke and a stiff Powerbomb to end the show.

On this week’s Talking Smack episode that aired on Saturday morning (read my review here), there was a promo from Paul Heyman, who is the Special Counsel to Reigns. Here’s my recap of what Heyman said as a warning to Rey Mysterio:

“Heyman said what happened to Dominik was the temper of the Head of the Table because he felt like his family was disrespected. Heyman implored Rey and begged Rey to not come after Roman Reigns. Heyman said that the next time Reigns attacks Rey or Dominik, Roman will be unhinged. Heyman told Rey that if he wants to protect his son he shouldn’t try to get revenge on Reigns, he should walk the hell away. Heyman told Rey he can’t win this one. Heyman was actually in tears with a tear rolling down his face. Heyman said that is an indictment upon the entire world that is number two in a universe – a multiverse – with only one number one…Roman Reigns.”

TJR Thoughts: When I watched that clip, I knew it meant that WWE had to go with Reigns vs. Mysterio for the Hell in a Cell PPV. It makes sense in the storyline even though I doubt Rey is going to win a match to set it up. It might just be set up because it’s Rey wanting revenge on Roman for what Roman did to Dominik, who could be out injured to sell Roman’s attacks. Will it be inside Hell in a Cell? We don’t know that right now. As of now, no matches at the Hell in a Cell PPV are going to be in the cell, but that should change over the next two weeks.

That means the Hell in a Cell lineup on June 20 looks like this for now:

WWE Championship: Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Drew McIntyre

WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Rey Mysterio – RUMORED for now. It’s not known if it will be a title match.

Raw Women’s Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Charlotte Flair

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Bayley

There’s a Tag Team battle royal on Raw on Monday. The winners of that match will get a Raw Tag Team Title match in the future, so AJ Styles & Omos vs. Tag Team Battle Royal winners may be part of the Hell in a Cell PPV as well.
