Likely Reason Why WWE Shockingly Released Kairi Sane
Kairi Sane was officially released from her WWE contract on April 24, 2026, as part of a major wave of post-WrestleMania 42 roster cuts.
Along with Sane, approximately 25 other superstars were reportedly released, including Aleister Black, Zelina Vega, and the entire Wyatt 6 faction, among others.
According to reports, these layoffs were carried out to cut costs associated with underutilized talent, maximize profitability, and create roster space for new signings.
Speaking on a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that he thinks, unlike many others, Kairi Sane was not released as part of the company’s cost-cutting strategy.
Instead, she was let go because she had indicated that she wanted to move back to Japan. Meltzer added that money was not an issue in her case, noting that WWE and UFC, under TKO Group Holdings, generate billions in revenue:
“The Kairi thing, the reason she was cut was I think she had kinda indicated that she wanted to move back (to Japan). “The reality is, this is not a money issue. This company makes… whatever it is. The revenue between UFC and WWE and throwing everything in, the revenue’s in the billions of dollars.” [H/T WrestleTalk]
Backstage Reaction To Kairi Sane’s Sudden WWE Release
Kairi Sane was actively involved in a major long-term storyline with Asuka and Iyo Sky on WWE Monday Night Raw, which is why her unexpected release came as a shock to people backstage in WWE.
According to a report from Fightful Select, several individuals backstage were frustrated that she was released before her storyline with Iyo Sky and Asuka received any real payoff. It was also reported that many expect Kairi to land in any promotion she chooses.
Despite Kairi’s absence, Asuka and Iyo Sky continued their storyline on this week’s episode of RAW. Asuka attacked Iyo Sky during her match with Becky Lynch for the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship. The Empress of Tomorrow caused a distraction during the match, which allowed Lynch to retain her title.
Following the match, Asuka attacked Sky and took her out with her submission maneuver. Later in the show, it was announced that Asuka and Iyo Sky will face each other in a singles match at WWE Backlash 2026 on May 9, 2026.
