Paul Wight Recalls Floyd Mayweather’s Reaction After WWE Nose Breaking Incident
Paul Wight, aka WWE’s Big Show, revealed how Floyd Mayweather reacted after breaking the big man’s nose.
At the WWE No Way Out 2008 pay-per-view, former WWE World Champion Paul Wight (aka Big Show) was back in the company after taking a year off.
As part of his return to the company, WWE had made a deal with legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. to wrestle Big Show at WrestleMania 24. To set the angle off, Show attacked Rey Mysterio, which led to Mayweather and his security guys going into the ring.
There was a huge size difference as Mayweather faced off with Big Show and exchanged shoves. Show went down to one knee, so Floyd punched him three times in the face and then ran away with his buddies. Show left the ring to chase after Floyd, but he was stopped by some security guys, and Shane McMahon was there to stop Show as well.
During a recent interview with James Sweetnam, Paul Wight shared some insight into what really happened and why Mayweather breaking his nose wasn’t an accident, and Mayweather also ran away looking like he was scared of Show’s retaliation.
“Yeah. Well, he had a good reason to be. I mean, you know, I asked him to break my nose, but I did tell him, I said, ‘When you do, run, because there’s going to be about 10 seconds, if I get my hands on you, I’m going to pull your arms off of you. I’m going to pluck you apart like a Ken doll.’”
Wight credited Mayweather for getting out of there quickly.
“He was smart enough to do that. But I think I did such a good job on my end of being in the moment that he left the building. We had to call him to come back to let him know that everything’s okay and we’re off and rocking and rolling and doing business.”
Paul Wight Knows The Importance Of Creating Big Moments In Pro Wrestling
Paul Wight is a future WWE Hall of Famer who currently works for AEW behind the scenes and got his start in the business in WCW, where he won his first World Title.
After such a long career in pro wrestling, Wight knows how to tell a story, and he explained it further.
“That’s the fun part of it. You know, those are crazy moments in time that you’re working hard. That’s the thing about pro wrestling that we try to do. Yes, there’s a predetermined outcome. Yes, it’s entertainment. No, you shouldn’t try this at home. This is a trained environment by trained professionals.”
“But when we do our job, we are able to suspend belief just for that microsecond. You know, those are the moments you look for where you push the envelope because you want people to go, ‘Oh, wow. That was crazy. That was insane.’ That’s what we try to give. That’s what every wrestler that comes down that ramp, whether that moment happens or not, believe me, the heart and desire of everyone is to give everybody the best performance that we can.”
Even though he was the much smaller man, Floyd Mayweather beat Big Show at WrestleMania 28 by knockout in what was one of the most anticipated matches at that year’s WrestleMania.
