Pat McAfee’s involvement in WWE on the road to WrestleMania has received mixed reviews from fans.

On Friday, McAfee inserted himself into the Randy Orton-Cody Rhodes rivalry for the Undisputed WWE Championship at the Showcase of the Immortals.

Orton opened the show in a speaking segment, which transitioned into a brawl after Rhodes made his presence felt in the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

Shortly after, Pat McAfee entered the ring unannounced while wearing a Randy Orton t-shirt and kicked Cody Rhodes in the groin, revealing himself as Orton’s mystery caller.

The momentum, thus, shifted in favour of The Viper, who hit Cody with a few chair shots, whereas McAfee stomped on him a few times, too.

The professional football punter and sports analyst then explained his actions, as he spoke about WWE’s ongoing struggles building towards WrestleMania.

The two heels then left the champion laid out as general manager Nick Aldis and other officials checked on him.

Mark Henry Happy With Pat McAfee’s Involvement In WWE

While the fans remain divided about Pat McAfee’s appearance on SmackDown, WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry has extended his support to his inclusion in the storyline.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, the World’s Strongest Man also addressed the backlash. Henry compared the old school wrestling to the modern style while trying to make sense of McAfee’s actions.

A lot of the hardcore, old-school wrestling guys keep saying stuff like, ‘I used to watch back in the Attitude Era. I used to watch when guys looked like they would just beat you up just for looking at them. The days of big, burly, middle-aged men wrestling is over. That’s why our business is soft now.

That’s what Pat McAfee was saying. ‘I want to bring back that part of wrestling—the toughness, the aggressiveness. We’re a little too PG.’ That’s what Pat McAfee is saying. He wants to help change it.

He spoke about how the story is now focused on bringing changes, which cannot be achieved by ruffling some feathers.

I want change. I love the fact that there’s somebody else that wants change, and sometimes, in order to have change, you’ve got to ruffle a few feathers. And so far, it looks like everybody’s feathers are ruffled.

What Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes are heading towards is going to be Attitude Era-esque. I’m excited for WrestleMania even more than I already was.
