New Details Emerge After John Cena Breaks The Internet With WWE Backlash Announcement

In the latest report, more new details have been provided regarding John Cena’s massive announcement at WWE Backlash 2026.

Following his in-ring retirement last year, John Cena is still somehow associated with the WWE. He was the host of WrestleMania 42 and made an appearance at the Backlash 2026 PLE recently as well. At Backlash, Cena announced ‘The John Cena Classic,’ where stars from NXT and the main roster will compete for a new championship that will be unveiled soon. It was also announced that the champion will be decided by fan voting regardless of the match results.

Following his major announcement at Backlash 2026, John Cena took to the X social media platform to address the risks of failure involved in ‘The John Cena Classic.’ Cena also explained why he announced the Classic while thanking WWE for the opportunity:

My ‘why’ in WWE is to consistently be as useful as possible for as long as possible, with my in ring career at an end, my ‘why’ is to use whatever energy or relevance I have left in hopes to create a launchpad of opportunity for all talent to show their skills while simultaneously creating a unique experience for our dedicated fan base. Details on The John Cena Classic announcement at WWE Backlash

After Cena announced ‘The John Cena Classic’ at WWE Backlash 2026, Dave Meltzer came up with a report with details regarding the same. Meltzer reported on the Wrestling Observer Daily Updates that the Classic is still a work in progress:

Regarding the details of the John Cena Invitational, we were just told today that this is a work in progress”

Dave Meltzer also noted that the WWE made the announcement, but it’s not decided, so the matches and how the champions will be crowned in the Classic are still speculation:

They wanted to make the announcement but as far as what it is, that is not decided so any speculation of tournament vs. individual matches or how the champions will be set up is just speculation.” [H/T WrestlePurists]
