Pat McAfee is getting heel heat the right way, according to a former WWE Champion who was known for being a bad guy.

It was in the spring of 2004 that the former Bradshaw morphed into a different character on the SmackDown brand, becoming a heel named John Bradshaw Layfield, aka JBL.

JBL was a guy who was happy to brag about how rich and successful he was while reminding fans of past wrestling heels like the “Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase and a television heel, JR Ewing from “Dallas.”

After beating Eddie Guerrero for the WWE Title, JBL went on to hold the coveted gold for an incredible 279 days, which was one of the longest title reigns of his era.

In today’s WWE, Pat McAfee recently turned heel by aligning with Randy Orton as the master of the RKO is set to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.

Since McAfee was allowed to swear in his first (and second) promos as a heel, many WWE superstars like Damian Priest have said they aren’t happy about it, and it’s likely not just because of the language used.

“Like I was asked by some of the younger talent, like, what did I think? And I thought it was bull. We’re a PG show, right? But he could come in and he could throw F-bombs and say whatever he wants.

For me, that’s like one of those things that so many other talent, even from one word, can benefit. And it’s like, wow, now they’re up here.

Instead, you take somebody who’s not even here all the time and gets away with saying something like that, who doesn’t even need it. Not going to lie, it kind of pi**ed me off.”

JBL Credits Pat McAfee For Getting Good Heel Heat

While many online fans are also whining that McAfee may be overshadowing Orton in his match against Rhodes, WWE Hall of Famer JBL appeared on Something To Wrestle to defend Pat against the critics and haters.

“It just blows me away when a guy gets heat like this, people go, ‘Oh, no, no, no. It’s go away heat.’ No, it’s not. You’re talking about it. If it was go away heat, you would not be talking about it because you would not like it. You would not even mention it.

It’s real heat. And people look out there, they want to have heels to my fans. They want to have heels, but they want to be in on it. They go, ‘Hey, listen. I, you know, he’s a great heel.’

If you’re saying somebody is a great heel, they’re not a heel because you realize they’re playing something. When you come out there, and you’re able to strip away the veneer of that person’s playing a heel to that person’s just an a***ole, and I don’t like them, that’s when you’re winning.”

The McAfee angle is being talked about a lot, but whether that’s a good thing or not is up to each individual to decide.
