John Cena has recently shared a post about this major match at the Royal Rumble.

John Cena wrestled his final ever match on December 13th, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event and lost after tapping out to Gunther’s sleeperhold.

This was The Ring General’s second win, in which he made a WWE Legend retire, his first being Bill Goldberg.

Gunther now has his sights set on AJ Styles, whom he has been feuding with over the past month after John Cena’s retirement, because Styles wanted to teach Gunther some respect. He slapped Gunther across the face in the center of the ring on Raw, and The Ring General challenged him to a match the following week to settle scores.

Things didn’t go exactly as planned for The Phenomenal One, however, as Gunther cheated and outsmarted Styles to win the bout.

When Styles demanded a rematch, Gunther said that he would only be incentivised to wrestle Styles again if Styles put his career on the line.

The match was made official for the Royal Rumble, and although Styles has already declared he will retire in 2026, it could happen sooner than later if he loses to Gunther on January 31st.
