John Cena’s farewell tour, “The Last Time is Now,” took place in 2025.

The farewell tour consisted of approximately 36 dates and 18 matches. The tour concluded on December 13, 2025, with his final match against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

John Cena’s Retirement Match Had An Easter Egg

Speaking in a recent interview with O’Shea Jackson Jr. and TJ Jefferson on No Contest Wrestling, John Cena revealed that his retirement match with Gunther featured a hidden Easter egg.

Cena disclosed that for the match, he grew out his hair to resemble The Prototype, his early-career character from Ultimate Pro Wrestling.

There’s so many Easter eggs that people don’t know about to the point of like even in the match against Gunther, I tried to grow my hair out like the prototype from UPW like and OVW.

That all I could do I couldn’t dye it because I was working in between stuff but I could grow fade it and grow it long so I can have like that comb back. Yeah. Even like nobody caught that, but nobody’s supposed to. I was just doing it for like, man, if you get it, you get it. (From 1:08:46 – 1:09:06)

John Cena lost his retirement match to Gunther via tap-out. Many fans were upset with the booking by WWE and Triple H, believing that Cena was not given a proper send-off.

However, speaking about the tap-out loss during the No Contest Wrestling podcast, Cena stated that losing by submission was the best possible way for him to retire, adding that the tap-out finish was his idea and his idea alone.

It was a brave choice to be like, we’re killing the character off. What’s the craziest way we can do it? Yeah. You know, smiling and giving up. [Host: How did that come about?]

That was all that was my choice. And again, I’m if you have a different opinion than my perspective, my responsibility is to use my talent, strengths, and gifts to give you everything I have to try to keep you entertained. I’m only just making the bets that I can make. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don’t. (From 1:07:54)
