John Cena Accused Of Burying Iconic WWE Faction
John Cena is famous for helping younger wrestlers shine, often taking losses to lift up new talent.
But back in August 2010, he got some serious heat for what people say was “burying” one of WWE’s most exciting new groups, the Nexus. The Nexus, led by Wade Barrett, had exploded onto the WWE scene just a couple of months earlier.
They took over Monday Night Raw with a rebellious vibe that made them the hottest act in wrestling. They had solid momentum until things went downhill at SummerSlam 2010.
During a high-stakes 7-on-7 elimination match, Cena led Team WWE to a big win against the Nexus, but that victory ended up crushing the faction’s momentum and lasting appeal.
It was later revealed that the original plan called for the Nexus to win, but Cena reportedly used his backstage influence to change the finish. Fans and critics still say Cena destroyed the group to stay on top, hindering the group’s chance to shine.
John Cena Destroyed The Nexus.
Speaking in a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Nexus Member David Otunga was asked if he thinks John Cena buried The Nexus. He agreed with the statement, claiming that Cena is the one to blame for Nexus’ downfall in WWE.
“Oh yeah, that’s 100% accurate. I mean, that’s what happened, that is what happened.”
Despite this, Cena has always been known for elevating others. Even as he winds down his WWE career, fans expect him to put over a young talent, perhaps Dominik Mysterio, in a big fashion.
Mysterio is set to challenge John Cena for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at the upcoming Survivor Series on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Petco Park in San Diego, California.
Mysterio lost the IC title to Cena last week on Raw in Boston. He then crashed Cena’s promo at Madison Square Garden to demand a rematch for the title on RAW this week, a challenge that Cena readily accepted.
