Gunther Raises Stakes For Next Week’s WWE Championship Match On SmackDown
WWE superstar Gunther had been on a legendary run for the last year before his 302-day winning streak came to an end at Clash in Italy. He took on Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship in Italy, but the match ended in controversy.
The American Nightmare retained his title against The Ring General, but it seemed like his foot was under the rope, so the pin should never have counted. Following his loss, Gunther was livid and came out to SmackDown last week, demanding a rematch.
Cody Rhodes came out and addressed the finish to their match, confirming that he’s willing to give Gunther a rematch for the title, given the circumstances of his win at Clash in Italy.
Gunther chooses guest referee for the WWE Title match
Rhodes wanted to have the match last week, but Gunther left the show early. SmackDown General Manager, Nick Aldis, then had a conversation with Cody Rhodes and told him that their title match will take place at next week’s edition of the blue brand.
He even informed him that Gunther would choose the stipulation of the match, which he was due to announce on tonight’s show. Earlier in the night, he confirmed to Aldis that he’s lost faith in the referees that the SD General Manager will choose.
The Ring General stated that he would pick the referee for his title match next week, and after the heated confrontation between Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes, he picked Zayn to be the Special Guest Referee for next week’s Undisputed WWE Championship match.
