In the wake of the announcement of a new TV deal for SmackDown, WWE has begun a fresh round of cuts to its talent roster.
Following the completion of the takeover of WWE by Endeavor on September 12th, over 100 staff were let go in layoffs that were expected as the company was merged with UFC to form the TKO Group. The cuts have now reached onscreen talent, as multiple stars were let go on September 21st.
Mustafa Ali was the first to announce his departure from the company on Thursday afternoon, stating that is “no longer working with WWE.” The news came despite the star having recently become the number one contender for Dominik Mysterio’s North American Championship, with the match between the two scheduled for NXT No Mercy on September 30th.
Another top name to be let go was former World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler, who has been with the promotion for almost two decades.
Popular stars such as Elias, Tenille Dashwood, and Shelton Benjamin have also been let go from their contracts in the latest round of releases.
According to a report from Fighful Select, the cuts have caused “frustration” for some in the company due to the timing being so soon after the announcement of a $1.4 billion deal that will see SmackDown moving back to USA Network in 2024.
