First Match Announced for WWE Clash of Champions on Sept. 27: McIntyre vs. Orton for WWE Title

The next WWE pay-per-view is four weeks away on Sunday, September 27 from the WWE ThunderDome setup at Amway Center in Orlando.

Last night on Raw, Keith Lee beat Dolph Ziggler, Randy Orton beat Kevin Owens (thanks to help from Aleister Black) and Seth Rollins beat Dominik Mysterio.

That led to Orton facing Lee and Rollins in the main event with Orton pinning Rollins after Lee hit Rollins with a Spirit Bomb. Orton hit Lee with an RKO to stun him before Orton pinned Rollins.

Orton lost clean to Lee this past Sunday at Payback and the previous Sunday to Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam, yet Orton is getting another WWE Title match. At least he earned it. The storyline is that McIntyre has a hairline fracture in his jaw due to Orton’s three Punt kicks on Raw two weeks ago. It’s just a storyline injury for McIntyre, who is getting a break for at least a few weeks.

Also on Raw, the Riott Squad duo of Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan won a match against The IIconics to earn a Women’s Tag Team Title match. What we don’t know is if that match will be at Clash of Champions. That wasn’t confirmed during Raw.

Clash of Champions will have more matches than most PPVs because WWE sells it on the idea that all of the Raw/Smackdown titles will be defended on the show. That means, in addition to the WWE Title, the following titles will be defended.

* Universal Championship held by Roman Reigns.

* Intercontinental Championship held by Jeff Hardy.

* United States Championship held by Bobby Lashley.

* Smackdown Women’s Championship held by Bayley.

* Raw Women’s Championship held by Asuka.

* Smackdown Tag Team Championships held by Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura.

* Raw Tag Team Championships held by Street Profits.

* Women’s Tag Team Championships held by Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.

That’s eight titles plus the WWE TItle, so that means there will be nine matches at least, which could lead to two or three on the Kickoff Show instead of just one.

TJR Thoughts: I picked Orton to beat McIntyre at SummerSlam and got it wrong. I will probably pick Orton at Clash of Champions as well. I just think it’s time for a title change and that WWE will want to give Orton a pretty good run as the champion to end the year.
