Ex-WWE Star Reveals Real Reason For Failed AEW Run
A former WWE Superstar had a brief, unsuccessful run in AEW.
Awesome Kong competed in Japan and on the independent circuit for several years before joining TNA Wrestling in 2007. The 48-year-old had a successful stint in the promotion, winning the TNA Knockouts Championship and the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Title.
In 2010, Kong left TNA Wrestling and joined WWE. Nevertheless, she competed in only one match before she was released from her contract in 2012.
After wrestling for several other promotions over the next few years, Kong debuted in AEW in 2019, aligning herself with Brandi Rhodes. The two later formed The Nightmare Collective.
However, the angle was dropped as the former TNA Knockouts Champion went missing from AEW TV. After almost a year of absence from Tony Khan’s promotion, she officially left the company in mid-2021.
The Ex-WWE Star Explained What Went Wrong In Her AEW Run
In a recent interview with Busted Open Radio, Awesome Kong opened up about her brief AEW run, disclosing why she failed to make an impact.
The former WWE star claimed the timing of her arrival at AEW was wrong. She pointed out that she was busy with GLOW and other things in her career at the time. Kong also stated that her run might have been more successful had she joined Tony Khan’s promotion later than she did.
I think the timing just wasn’t right, you know? AEW was in it’s honeymoon/teething stage, and I was busy with GLOW and other things, and whatnot, and so there were a lot of moving parts to my career at the time. [H/T: WrestlingInc.]
