Cody Rhodes Reveals WWE Incident: “I Had A Bit Of An Outburst Backstage”
Cody Rhodes’ backstage, non-wrestling appearances have usually seen him maintain a calm demeanor.
But while speaking virtually on a podcast recently, the Undisputed WWE Champion confessed to an outburst incident in the lead-up to WrestleMania 42, which went unreported.
The storyline had seen Rhodes’ opponent, Randy Orton, shockingly turn heel, which added spice to an otherwise babyface versus babyface bout.
Behind the scenes, though, there was a lot of commotion, with reports claiming TKO Group’s interference in the storytelling. One incident saw the introduction of Pat McAfee as Orton’s ally, which fans did not necessarily like, since the rivalry was a heated one as it is.
It was later revealed that McAfee’s entrance into the storyline was due to Ari Emanuel using his backstage influence. Grammy Award-winning artist Jelly Roll was also added to the mix, who played a key role in taking out McAfee at WrestleMania.
Cody Rhodes went on to retain his title, but endured a post-match beatdown, even eating a dreaded punt kick, which left him with a black eye.
Cody Rhodes Admits To Unreported Outburst Incident Backstage
The lead-up to Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 42 match against Randy Orton was reckless at best, considering the number of powers that were at play.
During his virtual interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, The American Nightmare was asked if he had any regrets from the build to the match at the Show of Shows.
In response, Rhodes claimed that he got angry one time backstage, although he did not reveal what his outburst was centered around.
I had a bit of an outburst backstage which shockingly didn’t get reported, and I knew when I got to my bus, and when I say outburst it was me muttering some curse words on the Christmas story, yelling and knocking over water bottles, nothing too intense.
In doing so, he also called Triple H the best booker in the history of the business. Cody Rhodes even shared that he had an interest in becoming a booker, too.
But I remember getting to my bus and thinking ‘Yeah, you outgrew that’. If you want a job in the wrestling space, nobody has a harder job than Triple H right now. There has never been a booker in the history of the business that has been beloved and revered the entire time, nobody has a harder job and nobody can do it better than he can do it, and it’s obviously something that interests me too.
So I imagine thinking when I got to the bus that I’d outgrown that. I don’t need to be having temper tantrums, I need to be providing solutions.
Cody Rhodes said that his outburst was over something trivial.
I’m not going to tell you (what caused it), you’ll get me in trouble. It’s probably such a non-factor, I think it was an F-bomb being dropped in the ring, because I am genuinely a goody-two-shoes, and there’s really no room for those on our show, because we get blacked out. Not only do you think you’re saying something cool, but they black the feed out in the States, so you’re missing the show.
And you’ve got kids in the crowd. Their first experience with the F-word doesn’t need to come at a WWE show.
