El Mencho Killing Sparks Wrestling Cancellations All Over Mexico
The wrestling industry could take a big hit with AEW stars also stuck in Mexico as all hell breaks loose after the killing of cartel boss, El Mencho.
Mexico has been rocked by violence after the death of cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho.” Cervantes had been taken into custody by Mexican special forces shortly before his death.
El Mencho, Mexico’s most wanted man, was seriously injured in a firefight between his bodyguards and the military commandos deployed to capture him. As news of his death spread, violence broke out in the states where Cervantes’ Jalisco New Generation Cartel operates.
And it seems the violence is affecting the wrestling business in the country as well.
Wrestling Cancelled As Violence Spreads After El Mencho Death
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why this big news could have a major effect on wrestling in Mexico for the time being:
It does relate to wrestling because many, many, many shows have been cancelled in certain places in Mexico. A lot of places in Mexico, schools have been cancelled, people have been told to stay at home, don’t go out on the road unless you have to.
Mexico City, there’s nothing overtly bad, because when it comes to this kind of violence, there’s almost an unwritten rule that you don’t go to Mexico City because so much tourism and necessary money comes from Mexico City that you don’t want to screw that up. Most businesses are gonna be closed in five states in Mexico.
I don’t wanna say that shows are in jeopardy, although they are outside of Mexico City, but we’ll see what happens. There’s AEW talent there right now, Clon, Daniel Garcia, and Johnny TV, who has a hair vs. hair match Friday night at Arena Mexico against Angel de Oro, which is a really big match, obviously.
I don’t know what the state is there. I’m going to go with the idea that the Mexico City matches won’t be cancelled. But as far as Guadalajara, Puebla, we’ll have to wait the next 24 hours. Puebla’s tomorrow night, things are pretty dicey. Guadalajara’s Tuesday, so we’ll see what happens.
The wrestling is a very minor part of the story, but obviously, it’s the one we’re gonna be talking about. But it’s a wait-and-see. Lots of non-CMLL shows all over the country are being cancelled. People are afraid to leave the house; it’s a pretty scary situation.
