Cody Rhodes Candidly Addresses Concerning WWE Issue
One of the concerns plaguing WWE today is that of aging superstars as the main-eventers.
It was the same issue in WCW during the Monday Night Wars, something that the talent in the Stamford promotion at the time mocked in their promos.
Cody Rhodes is the current Undisputed WWE Champion, and he is 40 years old. Drew McIntyre, The Usos, and Roman Reigns are 40 as well. Meanwhile, CM Punk is 47, Randy Orton is 45, LA Knight is 43, and the list goes on.
WWE is not short on young talent either, but Cody Rhodes believes that experience still holds weight in the wrestling business.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club podcast recently, The American Nightmare addressed the criticism while sharing his perspective, stressing the word ‘seasoned.’
Seasoned. Well, it goes in phases. In the golden ’80s, we used to joke that a wrestler’s prime was 35 to 42. That’s because they needed all that experience psychologically. They worked town to town — live crowds were everything.
How do you work with a live crowd? How do you involve them? We’re not doing this just for each other or just for the camera — how are they involved? That has cycled back now. A few years ago, they brought in what I’d call all freshmen on a varsity team.
Cody Rhodes Looks Back At Inexperienced Times
While Cody Rhodes has believed in giving talent the right opportunity to shine, he claims that inexperience can result in the youth’s fall from grace.
While explaining his side, he looked back at his early career alongside the likes of CM Punk and Matt Cardona, claiming they weren’t ready when they were young.
There’s this famous picture of me and CM Punk and Matt Cardona — we were all babies and had won big titles, but we didn’t really have a clue at that point. We didn’t have that experience.
So now I think you’re getting back to where you’ve got guys like Roman, me, Punk, Randy — the main events of WrestleMania. I’d just say it’s a very experienced crew. [H/T: Ringside News]
Cody Rhodes will main event WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, where he will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton.
