AEW Star Suffers Injury At Grand Slam Australia
A popular AEW star is out of action.
In one of the biggest matches of his career, Buddy Matthews challenged Kazuchika Okada for the Continental Championship at Grand Slam Australia. Matthews, who grew up in Melbourne, was cheered to the rafters throughout but he was ultimately unable to topple the champion.
In some more bad news, it appears he suffered an injury in the process after he was pictured using a crutch after the show.
As reported by Mike Johnson of PWInsider, Matthews sustained an ankle injury during his match with Okada. The star appeared to suffer the injury during his entrance, but he wrestled the match as planned, although he was seen limping heavily once the action was over.
There’s no word on the extent of the injury, or how long Matthews will be out of action.
Toni Storm Makes History At AEW Grand Slam Australia
In the show’s main event, “Timeless” Toni Storm defeated Mariah May to claim the Women’s World Championship. With the victory, Storm became the first woman to win the title four times.
The event marked an emotional homecoming for Storm who grew up in Australia after moving from New Zealand when she was a young child.
Elsewhere, Mercedes Mone beat Harley Cameron to retain the TBS Championship, and the Death Riders saw off Cope and Jay White.
In the event’s opening match, Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay got the better of Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher in a wild tag team match.
Meanwhile, it’s been announced that AEW will be returning to Australia in 2026.
