14-Time WWE Champion Reaffirms Retirement: “I’ll Not Do Anything Physical”
There have been many instances in the past where a wrestler has returned from retirement and continued his in-ring journey. However, according to John Cena, it is not going to happen in his case.
Cena has stated multiple times that he is not going to step back inside the ring, and he reiterated that statement once again in his recent interview with The Takedown on SI.
Cena stated that he is done with in-ring competition for good and that he is not going to return to the ring in any physical capacity. However, Cena assured fans that he is going to remain with WWE in a non-wrestling role because he is very passionate about sports entertainment and WWE as a brand.
“This was the confusing thing about retirement. First of all, I will stay retired — no fall downs. I will not do anything physical. But that doesn’t mean I’m away from WWE. I mean, anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about not only the sports entertainment business but WWE as a brand. So it was simply a matter of like, ‘So where do I fit in now?’ And we’re still trying to find out those pieces, but I think we got a clear path.”
Why WWE Legend John Cena Retired From The Ring
Speaking to The Takedown on SI, Cena also opened up about his decision to retire from the ring. He stated that he knew it was time to walk away from active competition because his body could no longer keep up with the current WWE product.
“This new crop of extra talented superstars come up that are performing at a speed like the game just looks too fast for me… because it is. You’re right. I could change my style, but at the risk of ruining that energy that WWE invested in me. And that’s tough because from an ego standpoint, you got to step away from the audience. I love the audience. It’s great.”
