Cody Rhodes successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton despite Pat McAfee’s interference at WrestleMania 42 Night 1. However, he might be forced to relinquish his title soon.

The American Nightmare had already sustained a head injury while fighting Randy Orton. His blonde hair had turned crimson red during the match, and after Randy failed to beat Cody, he launched a heinous post-match attack on him.

Orton took the Undisputed WWE Championship belt and knocked Cody out with it. He then followed it up with a banned punt kick to Cody’s head. Following the attack, Rhodes’ left eye was seen completely swollen shut and heavily bruised.

Cody Rhodes Sustains A Major Eye Injury At WrestleMania 42

In the WrestleMania 42 Night 1 post-show, WWE showed a clip of the medical staff tending to Rhodes’ left eye after the main event. According to reports, he was placed in concussion protocol following the significant eye injury.

Cody Rhodes’ eye injury could lead him to take some time off TV to heal. Hence, we could see Triple H stripping him of his title before he leaves for his hiatus. Here are three possible scenarios that WWE can devise to strip the title and allow him to go on a hiatus:

First scenario: On Raw after WrestleMania, WWE can announce that Rhodes is forced to go on a hiatus due to his eye injury. Therefore, he will be stripped of his Undisputed WWE Championship. Stripping a champion of their title is a common practice in WWE when a superstar is out with an injury and has to take a break for rehabilitation.

For instance, in October 2025, Seth Rollins was stripped of the World Heavyweight Championship after sustaining a legitimate shoulder injury. In mid-2025, Liv Morgan was forced to vacate the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles with Raquel Rodriguez due to a dislocated shoulder that required surgery.

Second scenario: Following the WrestleMania match, Randy Orton lost his cool and brutally attacked Rhodes. After WrestleMania wraps up, Cody Rhodes could show up to take revenge on The Viper on SmackDown. However, as cunning as the Apex Predator is, he might use underhanded tactics to take out Cody.

He could exacerbate the already injured eye or inflict more damage on the American Nightmare, forcing Cody Rhodes to take a break from wrestling to heal his injuries. Hence, WWE would be forced to strip Cody Rhodes of the title.

Third scenario: Randy Orton taking out Rhodes with a punt kick is a clear indication that he was not satisfied with the result. Therefore, he could demand a rematch from Rhodes and coax him into giving him another title opportunity.

This time, Orton might make a foolproof plan and take help from some other heel superstar to defeat Cody Rhodes and capture the Undisputed WWE Championship, allowing Cody to take a break and rest for a while.
