Uncertainty Surrounds Major Cody Rhodes Storyline

Cody Rhodes holding Undisputed WWE Championship

What’s next for Cody Rhodes?

On the May 31st episode of SmackDown, AJ Styles appeared ready to retire having come up short in his latest bid to become World Champion.

However, his ‘retirement speech’ at the end of the show was nothing but a ruse, and he brutally attacked Cody Rhodes instead. Rhodes and Styles met for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Backlash and the American Nightmare won, but Styles has made it clear he wants a rematch.

Reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer said that while Rhodes and Styles are destined to meet again, the location is yet to be decided. Meltzer notes that the plan was for the pair to wrestle at Clash in the Castle, but the match could be held off until Money In The Bank.

Obviously there is a Cody Rhodes vs. A.J. Styles rematch coming off the 5/31 angle where Styles pretended to retire and then brought Rhodes in the ring to turn on him. As of early in the week, the plan was for this match to be on 6/15, and likely to be announced on 6/7. But it also could be held off until Toronto.

Cody Rhodes Has Surpassed John Cena

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed Rhodes’ recent success and how he’s become so loved by WWE fans. During the conversation, Meltzer stated that Cody Rhodes has surpassed John Cena and his run, adding he’s the most successful babyface since The Rock and Steve Austin.

In terms of merchandise sold in 2024, Rhodes tops the WWE list ahead of CM Punk, Jey Uso, and Roman Reigns.
