The John Report: WWE SmackDown 05/22/26 Review
This is WWE SmackDown, featuring Gunther responding to Cody Rhodes, Carmelo Hayes has a message for Trick Williams and Rhea Ripley kicks off the show.
The WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event special is on this Saturday, May 23rd, and we are on the road to Clash In Italy on Sunday, May 31st. Check out my SNME Preview here in case you haven’t done so already.
Last week on SmackDown saw Gunther beat Royce Keys in the main event. After the match, Cody Rhodes welcomed Gunther to SmackDown with a Cross Rhodes. It’s Cody defending the WWE Title against Gunther at Clash in Italy next weekend.
From Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, this is SmackDown for episode #1396. Follow me on Twitter/X @johnreport. Let’s get to it.
There was a video package showing highlights from last week’s show with Gunther beating Royce Keys in the main event and then Cody Rhodes putting down Gunther to end the show.
They showed some superstar walking before the show including Cody Rhodes, Shinsuke Namakura, Solo Sikoa with friends Talla Tonga & Tama Tonga, and Tiffany Stratton.
The commentary team was Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett. Mark Nash was the ring announcer.
Let’s Hear from Rhea Ripley
The WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley made her entrance for a promo. She was not in ring gear. Ripley was off last week because she was in Australia. They showed a video of two weeks ago when Jade Cargill and friends put Ripley down.
Rhea Ripley said she had one week off and it seemed like someone really missed her. Ripley said Jade Cargill and her crew decided to send a message, but all they managed to do is piss her off. Ripley said now that she’s back, she is itching for a fight. Ripley said if Jade wants her rematch then Ripley will beat her again at Clash in Italy.
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss made their entrance to talk to Ripley. Flair and Bliss said they need to be on the same page for their six-woman tag team match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Flair wondered where Ripley was last week. Ripley said she went home to see her family. Flair said they needed Ripley’s help. Ripley reminded Flair that she claimed she didn’t need Ripley. Flair said that they needed Ripley’s help with Ripley’s problem. Ripley wondered how she could trust Flair with her back since Bliss took a lot of the punishment last week. Flair said Ripley is trying to cause problems between Flair and Bliss.
Fatal Influence’s Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid interrupted. Jayne said she enjoyed seeing this. Jayne said this all started the second Fatal Influence set foot on the scene. Jayne did her usual bit about bragging about how great they are. Flair said she’s not interested in a back-and-forth, so she said she and Bliss can face any two members of Fatal Influence. Jayne agreed. Flair’s music played to end it.
Analysis: It’s the usual Flair-Ripley dynamic where they can’t seem to get on the same page, even though they are both babyfaces. The tag team match later is fine because the women’s division on SmackDown has been booked a lot better since WrestleMania.
Solo Sikoa was with Talla Tonga and Tama Tonga as Cathy Kelley showed up for an interview. Solo said that Talla is ready for Shinsuke Nakamura. Royce Keys interrupted, saying that Solo cost him a title shot last week and told Solo to stay out of his business. Solo said if you didn’t need help, all you had to do is say so. Solo said he won’t beat Keys ass even though Keys threw a chair at them. Solo said if you need somebody to watch your back on SmackDown, then who better to do that than family? Keys said nothing as Solo left with his group.
Talla Tonga made his entrance, joined by Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga.
(Commercial)
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss spoke backstage about their match tonight. Bliss claimed she wasn’t cleared, which was a lie, but it was Alexa’s way to tell Flair that she would team with Ripley and work together. Flair wasn’t thrilled about it.
Talla Tonga (w/Solo Sikoa & Tama Tonga) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
The big man Talla knocked Nakamura down with an uppercut. Talla worked over Nakamura with headbutts and stomps. Talla sent Nakamura hard into the turnbuckle. Talla hit knee drops that didn’t make any contact, followed by a body slam. Talla charged, Nakamura moved and Nakamura hit a knee. Nakamura dropkicked Talla over the top to the floor, and Talla landed on the floor. Nakamura did his “Come on” taunt to fire up the crowd. Talla avoided a kick and clotheslined Nakamura in the back of the head. Talla tossed Nakamura into the barricade. They went on a break, and I’ll take a break there too, as Talla was in full control.
The match continued with Talla catching Nakamura and hitting a powerslam. Nakamura countered a choke with an armbar on the right arm. Nakamura kicked Talla in the knee and Nakamura hit a knee strike to the back. Nakamura hit a roundhouse kick to the head. Talla went for a running kick, Nakamura avoided it and Nakamura hit a running knee to the ribs by the turnbuckle. Nakamura hit a step-up kick for a two count. Solo went on the apron, so Nakamura kicked him. Nakamura charged right into a spinning powerslam by Talla. Talla hit a Talla T-Bomb (a Chokeslam) for the pinfall win. It went about 10 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Talla Tonga
Analysis: **3/4 The winning ways of Talla Tonga continue. There was a bit of a distraction from Solo that allowed Talla to recover and hit two moves to beat Nakamura. The creative team has really gotten behind Talla Tonga in recent weeks and I’m not surprised that he got another win here. Nakamura putting over the younger guy makes sense, booking-wise, even though I want Nakamura to be used better.
After the match, Solo Sikoa wanted to attack Nakamura, but Tama Tonga stopped Solo from doing it since Tama is an old friend of Nakamura, or so we thought. Tama hit a running elbow smash to Nakamura’s head, and Solo hugged Tama. Damian Priest ran out to the ring with a chair, but Solo and his group left the ring to avoid a fight.
Analysis: It continues the story of Solo Sikoa’s group having issues with multiple wrestlers on the roster, including Damian Priest. I thought Royce Keys might get out there to stop Solo, but it didn’t happen.
A video package aired about the Roman Reigns-Jacob Fatu match at Clash in Italy. It’s a Tribal Combat Match. Great video.
SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis wanted referee Charles Robinson to check on Shinsuke Nakamura and make sure he’s okay. Cody Rhodes walked in after Charles left. Aldis claimed that Gunther isn’t there yet, so the Clash in Italy contract hasn’t been signed yet. Aldis assured Cody that the match is set and he’ll make Gunther sign.
Sami Zayn walked up to Cody Rhodes, saying if anybody knows how to beat Gunther, it’s him, so if you need help with anything, let him know. Cody said no thanks. Zayn didn’t like that. Zayn wondered what Aldis had for him tonight, and Aldis said there might not be time for him tonight. Zayn complained about “Golden Boy” Cody, who can have a match or segment any time he wants. Cody was still there, and Cody was fired up, saying he could have a match with Zayn tonight. Zayn was shocked by it.
Analysis: That’s a big match for later in the show. I certainly don’t mind Cody against Sami. Two of the best.
Tiffany Stratton made her entrance as the Women’s US Champion for an open challenge.
(Commercial)
Solo Sikoa was backstage with Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga. Tama said that everybody thinks that they are weak. Tama said that’s the problem. Tama said that Solo has to handle Priest on his own. Tama said Solo had to show that the family isn’t weak and Solo had to do this on his own, for the family. Solo said for the family, he’ll go talk to Mr. Aldis.
Tiffany Stratton waited in the ring for her open challenge opponent. The open challenge was answered by Lash Legend of the Irresistible Forces, and Lash was joined by Nia Jax.
Nia Jax said that at Saturday Night’s Main Event, they will take back their Tag Team Titles. Lash said that gold looks so good on them, and tonight, she’ll snatch that Women’s US Title.
Women’s United States Championship: Tiffany Stratton vs. Lash Legend (w/Nia Jax)
The powerful Lash tossed Stratton across the ring. Stratton hit a dropkick, but Lash came back with a shoulder tackle. Stratton kicked Lash out of the ring. Stratton did a slingshot cross body block onto Lash on the floor. It wasn’t a pretty spot, but it worked. Lash slammed Stratton onto the ring apron. Chelsea Green went down to the ring to support Stratton. They took a break there while Lash took control for a few minutes.
Lash set up Stratton against the turnbuckle. Stratton applied a sunset flip for a two count, but Lash came back with a punch to the jaw for two. The fans chanted “Let’s Go Tiffy” for Stratton, who hit a jawbreaker to break free from a chinlock. Lash charged at Stratton, who moved and Lash hit the post. Stratton countered a move with a jawbreaker. Stratton hit a cartwheel back elbow and a springboard Stunner for a two count. Cool move right there. Stratton countered a Lash move wit ha hurricanrana. Lash came back with a Powerbomb for two. Stratton countered a Lash move with a crucifix pin for two. Stratton went up top, Jax grabbed the foot while the referee was looking at Lash and Stratton jumped over Lash. Lash kicked Stratton to knock her down. Green shoved Jax into the ring post. Lash grabbed Green by the hair, so Stratton got a ROLLUP OF DEATH~! on Lash for the pinfall win after about 9 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Tiffany Stratton
Analysis: *** It was a pretty good title match with Tiffany Stratton finding a way to win thanks to the unlikely help of Chelsea Green, who has been a heel in the past, but it looks like she’ll be a face now. Tiffany Stratton looks like she has added a few moves, which is cool to see. I didn’t expect Lash to win and since Stratton won after a distraction finish, it doesn’t hurt Lash too much.
After the match, Chelsea Green celebrated with Tiffany Stratton while Stratton wasn’t that thrilled about Green helping her. Green was being over the top and enthusiastic as usual.
Trick Williams and Lil Yachty were shown walking backstage for a segment up next.
A video aired about Club WWE, which was narrated by John Cena.

The SmackDown GM, Nick Aldis, was informed by somebody on a headset that the power issue was coming from one room. Danhausen was in the ring working on his Cloning Machine and it’s causing power issues. Aldis said that they are live and having power issues. Aldis asked why he’s doing this. Danhausen said he’s doing science experiments and more lights went off. Aldis wanted to look at what’s under a cover on a bed, but Danhausen told him not to look at that.
Analysis: Danhausen’s wackiness is entertaining to me. There are rumors that this will lead to Baron Corbin’s WWE return, which is fine with me, but I don’t know how it involves the cloning machine.
A video aired about the mainstream sports world acknowledging Danhausen’s curse that has led to the New York Knicks having success.
The Miz and Kit Wilson were interviewed by Cathy Kelley, who is barefoot for some reason. Kelley mentioned The Miz’s issues with Danhausen, so Miz claimed he wasn’t cursed. Kelley mentioned Miz’s Cleveland Cavs are 0-2 because of Danhausen’s curses, too. Anyway, Fraxiom’s Nathan Frazer & Axiom interrupted, so Kit Wilson and Miz got angry at them for the disrespect. Miz challenged Axiom to a match on SmackDown in Spain next week, and Axiom accepted.
Let’s Hear from Trick Williams
The United States Champion Trick Williams made his entrance with Lil Yachty. Trick said he thinks Lexington loves Trick and Yachty. They mentioned Trick beating The Miz last week, and Yachty said if you interrupt the champ, then you’ll get stepped on.
Carmelo Hayes made his entrance as the former US Champion. Melo was in his ring gear, just like Trick. Melo said they both knew this day would come. Melo told Trick he needed to do the right thing and he claimed that Trick screwed him out of the US Title. Melo said if it wasn’t for Trick, Melo would still be the champion. Melo said he wasn’t trying to discredit Trick. Melo said he always knew Trick was capable. Melo said he won these people over with his hard work, along with his blood, sweat and tears. Melo wanted a shot at the US Title right here and right now.
Yachty responded said when you are a champion like Trick, you have a busy schedule. Yachty was claiming Trick was busy with appointments. Melo called Yachty the “secretary.” Melo said maybe Trick likes being second fiddle.
Trick claimed he didn’t play with his leftovers, but since he knows that the people want to see Trick face Carmelo Hayes, so Trick was okay with it. Trick said that the open challenges are done when he won the title and claimed this ass-whooping is on the house.
Analysis: A solid promo exchange between the old friends Melo and Trick. I thought Melo had some good lines. Trick was a bit heelish in some of the things he said, but he’s obviously a babyface now.
(Commercial)
Trick Williams (w/Lil Yachty) vs. Carmelo Hayes
This was not a title match. Trick hit a shoulder tackle and a body slam. Melo jumped over Trick and hit a dropkick. Melo worked over Trick with chops. Trick hit an uppercut punch, followed by a slap to the face. Melo hit a step-up enziguri kick. Melo ran the ropes and Trick hit a jumping side kick. Melo got a sunset flip for two. Melo went for a springboard move, but Trick caught him and hit a Book End for two. Trick hit another side kick for two. Trick followed up with a suplex. Trick sent Melo throat-first across the top rope. Trick went for a kick, Melo ducked it, and Melo dumped Trick out of the ring. Yachty stood over Trick to stop Melo from doing a dive. They went on a break there, and I’ll take a break too.
The US Champion Trick was in control with a chinlock until Melo hit a jawbreaker to break free. Melo went for a move, but Trick was able to avoid it and hit a neckbreaker. Trick did a popup back to his feet as Ricky Saints appeared at ringside. Melo hit a springboard clothesline and Melo hit his spinning slam into the mat called Dirty Diana. Trick hit an uppercut, Melo hit two superkicks and Trick came back with a spinning kick to the face for a two count. Great flip bump by Melo. Trick charged, but Melo countered it with the First 48 double knee attack for two. Melo went up top slowly, Ricky Saints tried to encourage him as a distraction, so Trick punched Melo out of the ring. Outside the ring, Trick shoved Ricky out of the way. Melo rolled up Trick for a pinfall, but the referee was looking at Ricky. After Melo let go, he tried to hit Ricky, who bailed to the floor. Trick ran the ropes and hit the Trick Shot knee for the win.
Winner by pinfall: Trick Williams
Analysis: ***1/4 It was an entertaining match between two guys who were together early in their NXT careers. They have come a long way since then. Ricky Saints’ presence at ringside caused Melo to be distracted and Trick capitalized for the win. This creative team loves distraction finishes.
Sami Zayn spoke with Johnny Gargano, who was lying on an equipment case. Zayn claimed he was always there for Cody Rhodes and he was happy for him. Zayn claimed he was the last real good guy left. Zayn told Gargano to never change who you are. Zayn told Gargano to never let anyone change you. Zayn left and Gargano knocked a water bottle over.
A commercial aired for Saturday Night’s Main Event.

When Rhea Ripley made her entrance, the graphic was shown to confirm Ripley defending the WWE Women’s Title against Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy.
Rhea Ripley & Charlotte Flair (w/Alexa Bliss) vs. Fatal Influence – Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid (w/Jacy Jayne)
It was Flair in control early on in this match. After a distraction from Jayne, Reid hit Flair with a forearm and knocked Flair out of the ring. Henley beat up Flair a bit on the floor as the show went on a break with the heels in control.
The match continued with Flair fighting on the apron, but Jayne was there to trip up Flair on the apron as Reid distracted the referee. Reid hit a twisting suplex. Henley tagged in with a boot to the head for two. Flair tried to break free after a forearm. Flair kept trying to tag out, but Reid prevented it. Flair and Reid hit a double clothesline. Ripley finally got the hot tag to a huge pop. Ripley unleashed on her opponents with clotheslines and dropkicks. Ripley hit a German Suplex on Henley. Ripley hit a rising kick to Reid and Ripley hit a Razor’s Edge, followed by a running knee. Henley saved Reid on the pin attempt and Flair kicked Henley out of the ring. Flair dove onto Henley and Jayne on the Ripley fought with Reid by the turnbuckle, Ripley avoided a kick and Flair ate a superkick. Ripley battled Reid some more and even hit Riptide. Flair tagged herself in and hit Natural Selection for the pinfall win.
Winner by pinfall: Rhea Ripley & Charlotte Flair
Analysis: **3/4 An easy win for Ripley and Flair. They took a long time to build up the hot tag to Ripley and when it happened, the fans exploded for it. Flair going back in to get the win was her way of showing that she wanted to prove she can win for her team. It’s an ego clash between Flair and Ripley.
After the match, the trio of Jade Cargill, Michin, and B-Fab attacked Flair, Ripley, and Bliss. Jade sent Ripley into the ring post. The women went fighting to the back, so Jade hit a pump kick to knock Rhea down. Jade hit Jaded on Ripley to stand tall.
Analysis: A cheap attack by Jade and friends to give Jade the advantage going into Clash in Italy. I think Ripley will definitely beat Jade at the Clash show.
Cody Rhodes was interviewed by Cathy Kelley in his dressing room. Cody said he can understand Sami Zayn’s mindset since Cody went through the same things about a decade ago. Cody said he’d hold Zayn accountable in their match tonight. Cody mentioned his match with Gunther at Clash in Italy and how Gunther can see what Cody does tonight.
A video package aired about the Roman Reigns-Jacob Fatu rivalry.
Solo Sikoa was shown walking backstage with Tama Tonga and Tall Tonga. Solo’s match was next.
(Commercial)
There was a replay of Jade Cargill beating up Rhea Ripley before the break.
The trio of Jade Cargill, Michin and B-Fab were interviewed by Cathy Kelley, who asked what they hoped to prove with that attack. Michin said that the best women left them laying. Michin said they are a dominant team. B-Fab said they can save themselves the embarrassment and not show up at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Jade mentioned Flair and Ripley don’t like eachother. Jade said they’ll do the work and get her title back.
Damian Priest vs. Solo Sikoa (w/Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga)
Priest is one half of the WWE Tag Team Champions. Priest clotheslined Solo out of the ring and sent him into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Solo sent Priest into the turnbuckle. Priest came back with a kick. Tama distracted Priest on the apron and Solo hit a Samoan Drop. They went on a break for some fans there as Solo was in full control.
Solo was on the top turnbuckle as Priest got back to his feet and punched Solo in the jaw. Priest connected with a superplex from the middle turnbuckle. Priest hit running back elbows against the turnbuckle. Priest avoided a move by Solo and Priest hit a Broken Arrow for a two count. Solo came back with a Spinning Solo slam after Talla hit a cheap shot and Solo got a two count. Priest hit a jumping kick to the head and a rebound lariat. Priest punched Tama on the apron. Priest avoided a Samoan Spike and hit a lifting flatliner. Priest hit Talla with two strikes on the apron, Priest charged into the ropes and Solo hit a Samoan Spike for the pinfall win. It went about 9 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Solo Sikoa
Analysis: **1/2 It felt like just an average match. Solo matches are typically like this, and Priest isn’t the kind of worker who is going to make it that much more exciting. The main story was that Solo won because Priest was distracted by the guys outside the ring and Solo capitalized to win.
After the match, the trio of Solo, Talla and Tama attacked Priest. Royce Keys made the save and cleared Tama and Talla from the ring. Keys was ready to fight Solo, but Solo walked away without a fight. Keys helped Priest and Priest grabbed Keys by the throat. Keys told Priest he was trying to help him, so Priest let go.
Analysis: They are trying to make it seem like Keys could go heel to be with Solo instead of staying a babyface, so we’ll see if Keys stays face or goes heel. I think Keys should be a face.
This Monday on Raw: A Roman Reigns-Jacob Fatu contract signing and Oba Femi kicks off the show.

The Women’s Tag Team Champions, Paige and Brie Bella, did a promo about how they are experienced. Paige said that Irresistible Forces can underestimate them, and Brie said that when they step into the ring, they won’t know what hit them.
The commentary team went over the Saturday Night’s Main Event lineup on May 23rd.
- WWE World Tag Team Championships: The Vision’s Logan Paul & Austin Theory (c) vs. The Street Profits – Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins
- Intercontinental Championship: Penta (c) vs. Ethan Page
- Sol Ruca vs. Becky Lynch
- Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss vs. Jade Cargill, Michin & B-Fab

You can watch Saturday Night’s Night Event, STREAMING LIVE May 23 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Peacock in the United States and YouTube internationally.
Chelsea Green was walking backstage when she saw SmackDown newcomer Blake Monroe. Green introduced herself, and Blake wasn’t impressed, so she left. Nia Jax and Lash Legend attacked Green by sending Green into some equipment cases. Some WWE Officials showed up to get Jax and Legend out of there.
Analysis: Welcome, Blake Monroe, to SmackDown. That was a quick way to debut her. Poor Green was attacked for helping Tiffany Stratton earlier in the show.
Sami Zayn made his entrance for the main event, and he was booed.
(Commercial)
Royce Keys approached Damian Priest backstage and wondered what Priest was doing. Keys said that Priest’s partner R-Truth called Keys to help Priest. Priest shouted back at Keys and said for all he knows, Keys works with MFTs. Priest explained his point of view, and Keys said if it’s an issue you want, then anybody can get it.
Analysis: It continues the story about how there’s some doubt about where Royce Keys’ loyalties lie.
The Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes made his entrance for the main event. The fans were cheering for him as usual.
Cody Rhodes vs. Sami Zayn
This was not for Cody’s WWE Title. Zayn wanted a handshake, and Cody shook his hand. Zayn hit an arm drag and they did another handshake. After Cody hit a front suplex into the mat, Cody wanted a handshake. Zayn didn’t shake it and told Cody to fight. Cody jumped over a charging Zayn and hit a powerslam. Cody went up top, but Zayn tripped him up and Cody was down by the turnbuckle. They went on a break there as the match continued. Cody was favoring a left knee injury, so Zayn hit a chop block on the left knee on the floor. Zayn stomped on Cody’s left knee. Zayn kept on wrenching on Cody’s left knee.
It was Zayn in control with punches, but Cody came back with a suplex. Cody hit a punch combo while selling the left knee injury and Cody hit the bionic elbow. Cody jumped off the ropes with a Cody Cutter for a two count. Zayn sent Cody to the ring apron and Zayn ran into Cody, who bumped from the apron onto the commentary table. That was a great bump by the champ. After Cody got back into the ring, Zayn set up for a Helluva Kick, but Cody avoided it. Cody walked to the top rope and hit a Cody Cutter off the top for a two count. Cody wanted Cross Rhodes, Zayn got out of it and Zayn got a cradle rollup for two. Zayn hit the Blue Thunder Bomb for a two-count, as usual for that move. Zayn applied the Figure Four Leglock on Cody, who sold it well until he turned it over and put the pressure on Zayn, who crawled to the ropes. Cody and Zayn exchanged punches, and then Cody jumped off the ropes with a Disaster Kick. Gunther showed up at ringside while the referee was looking at Zayn. Gunther grabbed Zayn in a Sleeper, Zayn charged, Cody moved and Zayn hit Gunther. Cody hit Cross Rhodes for the pinfall win. It went 12 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Cody Rhodes
Analysis: ***1/2 A very good TV main event by two talented veterans. It was what it needed to be, with Cody getting the win as expected, while Zayn inflicted some damage since Cody was selling the left knee throughout the match, yet found a way to overcome it. Zayn did some heelish things in the match, but I wouldn’t say he’s embraced the heel persona fully yet.
After the match, Gunther attacked Cody, who tried to fight him off. Gunther managed to connect with a clothesline and a Powerbomb. Gunther picked up Cody, so Zayn went into the ring as if he was going to help Cody, and then Zayn didn’t help at all as Gunther locked in a Sleeper. Zayn watched Cody get attack and Zayn slowly left the ring. Gunther held onto the Sleeper on Cody as Zayn thought about helping again, but didn’t help Cody at all. Gunther held up the WWE Championship. Gunther celebrated over a fallen Rhodes in the ring while Zayn looked on from the aisle and refused to help Rhodes at all.
Analysis: That should cement the Sami Zayn heel turn since he didn’t help Cody Rhodes even though he could have. I doubt Gunther will beat Cody at Clash in Paris, but I wouldn’t mind it if Gunther became the champion.

Final Thoughts on WWE SmackDown
It felt like an average SmackDown this week. The match quality was okay, but overall not that strong. I liked the Cody Rhodes-Sami Zayn main event, even though it was predictable.
