The John Report: WWE SmackDown 05/15/26 Review
This is WWE SmackDown, featuring more of the Cody Rhodes-Gunther rivalry, a Trick Williams celebration, Jade Cargill appearing, and more.
The WWE Backlash PLE took place last Saturday, and now we are on the road to Clash In Italy in 16 days on Sunday, May 31st. I feel like SmackDown has been struggling for a few months now. I hope it gets better soon.
From the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina, this is SmackDown for episode #1395. Follow me on Twitter/X @johnreport. Let’s get to it.
They showed some superstars before the show, and that led into a Backlash video package.
Let’s Hear from Trick Williams
The United States Champion, Trick Williams, made his entrance in his wrestling gear in his hometown of Columbia. Trick had the South Carolina Gamecocks mascot with him, along with rapper Lil Yachty. The fans loved Trick with loud “Whoop That Trick” chants.
Trick Williams started off saying he’s back in Columbia, South Carolina. Trick mentioned his high school and the University of South Carolina. Trick said he grew up on these streets and mentioned his favorite restaurant. Trick kept on talking about eating chicken wings and mentioned his lemon pepper stepper shoes. Trick pointed out his family in the crowd, and they showed his parents. Trick told them to look at the star you’ve created. The fans cheered.
The Miz and Kit Wilson walked out, saying it’s a homecoming with a mascot. The Miz said Trick’s career is looking like rejected mascots from his daughter’s birthday party. Miz wondered if this was WWE or Sesame Street, and wondered if Big Bird was going to come out. Yachty trashed Miz for disrespecting Trick, and that’s why you got beat up, Minihausens, and that’s why you are cursed. Miz shouted that he was not cursed, so the fans chanted that Miz was cursed.
Wilson cued up some Slam Poetry, which drew boos. Wilson claimed he would lyrically mess them up. Wilson trashed Columbia by rhyming jocks with Gamecocks. The fans chanted “Whoop That Trick” at them. Yachty did a rap that ended with him saying “Whoop That Trick” to pop the crowd. Yachty said that they are mad they came out with Cocky (the mascot) since Miz has tiny balls, so it led to a “Tiny Balls” chant. Miz said they are not bringing Tiny Balls back and there is no curse. Miz said if he lived here, he’d volunteer to move to Tennessee. Miz called for a referee because Miz will whoop Trick’s ass in front of Trick’s momma. Trick punched Wilson and sent him out of the ring. Trick clotheslined Miz out of the ring.
Analysis: I liked the promos here. It was an easy way to set up a match with The Miz getting some heat by trashing Trick, his family, and the city with that promo. Wilson added to it. It’s a smart move to put Trick in a match in front of the hometown crowd that loves him.
A commercial aired for Clash in Italy on Sunday, May 31st.

The commentary team is Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett, as usual. Mark Nash was the ring announcer.
Trick Williams (w/Lil Yachty) vs. The Miz (w/Kit Wilson)
This was not for Trick’s US Title. The Miz has “Not Cursed” on the back of his trunks. Trick ran the ropes and hit a leaping clothesline. Miz hit a necksnap across the top rope. Miz jumped off the top, so Trick punched him in the ribs. Miz hit a knee to the ribs and a running boot. The fans chanted “Tiny Balls” at Miz, as Trick avoided a kick and hit a neckbreaker. Trick did his “Whoop That Trick” stomps against the turnbuckle. Trick went for a Trick Shot knee, but Miz avoided it. They were out on the floor as Trick hit an uppercut punch and sent Miz into the barricade. Trick sent Miz into the ring, the referee was looking at Miz, and Kit hit a cheap shot uppercut to knock Trick down. Miz kicked Trick down on the floor. They went on a break as the action continued, and I’ll take a break too with Miz in control.
The match continued as Trick and Miz exchanged punches. Trick hit an uppercut, along with two jumping side kicks. Trick hit a body slam. Trick hit a Book End for a two count. Miz came back with a DDT. The fans sang “Tiny, Tiny Balls” as Trick avoided a kick and got a rollup. Trick hit a flapjack, followed by a kip up. Wilson grabbed Trick’s foot, so Miz got a rollup for two and then Trick rolled through for two of his own. Miz got a hold of Trick and hit the Skull Crushing Finale for a two count. That is Miz’s finisher, so Trick kicked out of it. Wilson distracted the referee, so Miz grabbed a kendo stick from under the ring. Yachty went on the apron and took the kendo stick from Miz. Yachty hit Wilson twice with a kendo stick. Miz turned around, Trick ducked, ran the ropes and hit a Trick Shot knee for the pinfall win after 11 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Trick Williams
Analysis: ***1/4 A good TV match that was built up well in terms of how they did the finishing sequence. Yachty was a difference maker by stopping Miz from cheating and preventing Wilson from helping Miz, so that led to Trick finishing off Miz as you would expect in a match like this.
The fans were going crazy for Trick Williams with more “Whoop That Trick” chants.
Carmelo Hayes was interviewed by Cathy Kelley backstage. Melo said he’s been gone for a month and he knows the people want him back, so he’s here. Ricky Saints interrupted since they have a match this week. Ricky said there are new tenants on SmackDown since Melo has been off for the last month. Melo said this place has a funny way of humbling people, and it’ll happen to you. Ricky said you need an absolute lesson, and he’ll see him tonight. Melo said it’s like looking in a dirty mirror.
In the backstage area, Rey Fenix talked to SmackDown GM Nick Aldis, who said Fenix has been tearing it up in AAA. Fenix teased something big coming.
Analysis: It’s a shame that Rey Fenix isn’t being used more on SmackDown. I watched AAA sometimes, but I want Fenix to have a bigger role on the blue brand.
Sami Zayn walked up to Aldis to say he thinks he had a wakeup call. Zayn wants to go back to who he really is. Zayn wants a rematch for the US Title. Aldis said you just had a rematch, so if you want another shot, you have to earn it. Zayn complained that Aldis forgets what Zayn has done. Zayn said his ride or die fans haven’t forgotten. Aldis said clearly Zayn is dealing with some stuff, so Aldis told Zayn to deal with it. Aldis said that Zayn is entitled, and Aldis left. Zayn complained about Aldis saying that. Rey Fenix walked up to Zayn, wondering what was wrong with him. Zayn said he was the same guy. Fenix said he could hardly recognize him. Fenix left, and Zayn was frustrated.
Analysis: I like how Sami Zayn has these kinds of segments so we can see how his character is changing as a heel, even though he’s not embracing the heel role fully.

The Women’s Tag Team Champions, Brie Bella and Paige, were interviewed by Cathy Kelley backstage before the match. They spoke about how many teams are coming after them and then they are going to defend the titles on Raw this Monday. Nia Jax and Lash Legend chatted with Brie and Paige saying they wanted to take the titles from them at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The Brie Mode music hit, so they left for their match.
Brie Bella & Paige vs. Giulia & Kiana James
This is not a title match. The pairing of Giulia and James have had issues recently. Brie hit a bulldog on James and Paige hit a running kick for a two count. Giulia got the tag and hit some strikes on Paige. Giulia suplexed Paige across the ring for two. Paige hit a running kick, followed by some knee lifts on Giulia by the apron. James tripped up Paige on the apron. Giulia sent Paige into the ring post. They went on a break for some fans as the action continued. Giulia worked over Paige with some choking by the ropes. James tagged in with a neckbreaker on Paige, followed by knees to the back and an elbow drop. James did a Bella Twin mockery, which was very well done. Giulia stomped on Paige against the turnbuckle. I could hear the referee tell them “1 minute” to let them know the match would return from the break. Giulia jumped off the top, Paige avoided it and Giulia managed to trap Paige in an armbar.
The match returned with Paige hitting sunset flip Powerbomb out of the corner. Brie tagged in against James with a missile dropkick that barely touched James. Brie hit three running knee strikes and used her husband’s “Yes” kicks. Brie hit a Bella Buster sitout facebuster for a two count because Giulia made the save. Brie sent Giulia out of the ring. Giulia tagged back in, James hit a double knee Lung Blower and Giulia hit a Northern Lights Bomb on Brie for two because Paige made the save. James tagged back in, Page tackled Giulia out of the ring and Brie got a rollup for two. James hit a superkick, but a moonsault missed because Brie got the knees up. Paige was back in and hit the Rampaige DDT for the pinfall win after 9 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Brie Bella & Paige
Analysis: **3/4 A solid match to give Brie and Paige a win over an established team. It was mostly Giulia and James in control until Brie got the hot tag. There were some sloppy moments in the second half of the match, but they got through it okay. It wasn’t a surprise to see Bella and Paige get the win.
A clip was shown of SmackDown last week when Cody Rhodes cleared Gunther from the ring.
Cody Rhodes was shown walking backstage with the Undisputed WWE Title and a contract in hand.
(Commercial)
Tiffany Stratton, the Women’s US Champion, was interviewed by Cathy Kelley. While they were talking, Kiana James and Giulia were arguing backstage. Stratton said she’s just fine on her own. Chelsea Green walked up to Stratton, saying she was looking for her. Green tried to buddy up to Stratton, and Stratton said they were never meant to be a team. Green looked sad about it.
Let’s Hear from Cody Rhodes
The Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes made his entrance wearing dress clothes without a jacket. Cody tossed two leather chairs into the ring and brought out a table from under the ring to set up a contract signing.
Cody Rhodes asked Columbia what do you wanna talk about? The fans cheered. Cody said that he had a contract for Gunther to come to SmackDown and for a WWE Championship match at Clash in Italy, so that’s what we’ll do right here and right now.
Gunther made his entrance with “Career Killer” appearing on the screens along with his name. Gunther talked about the negotiations that went into this deal since it’s the roster transfer of the wrestler in WWE, yet Cody makes it all about himself. Gunther said it’s like a typical American since he sees it on Cody’s neck. Gunther said this is his deal, it’s his title match, and this will be his title. Gunther told the “Golden Boy” to be professional, address Gunther nicely and don’t forget to say please.
Cody said that Gunther is the one who got the drop on him and got Heyman to get Gunther a title shot. Cody said he’s the one with the US flag on his neck, but Gunther is making it weird. Cody told Gunther to please come to this ring and sign this contract, so that you’re guaranteed to get your ass kicked at Clash in Italy. There were “Cody” chants. Gunther claimed Cody didn’t really mean it when he said please.
Royce Keys interrupted the promo as Gunther wondered what he was doing here. Keys said if Gunther won’t sign it, then Keys will. Keys went into the ring with Cody. Keys was about to sign the contract, so Gunther went into the ring and stopped Keys from signing it.
Nick Aldis, the SmackDown GM, showed up for a promo. Aldis said that Gunther has overplayed his hand and now that title shot is up for grabs. Aldis said that Keys will face Gunther tonight and the winner of that match will sign on the dotted line and face Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at Clash in Italy. Gunther was angry about it.
Cody told Keys that he’s proud of him, and they are friends. Cody said that he’s easy to find and hard to beat. Keys stared at his buddy Cody and nodded his head at him. Keys left.
Analysis: There’s a twist in the contract signing story. Instead of Gunther getting the WWE Title shot, Royce Keys has a shot at the WWE Title. I don’t mind it because Gunther will have to beat a credible opponent like Keys to earn a WWE Title match. That’s better than just giving Gunther the title match.
Solo Sikoa was backstage with Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga. Solo asked Tama if he understood the assignment. Solo mentioned R-Truth is not cleared tonight, so Solo needs to take out Damian Priest. Tama nodded. Solo and Talla left to talk to Royce. Shinsuke Nakamura walked up to Tama, saying he had waited so long, and he knew Tama had already decided. Talla Tonga showed up to attack Nakamura by tossing him into some equipment cases. Talla gave Nakamura a Chokeslam through a table. Talla told Nakamura to stay away from his family. Officials showed up to stop the attack.
Analysis: That was a big bump for Nakamura. It certainly feels like Tama is going to break away from Solo soon.
A commercial aired for Saturday Night’s Main Event on May 23rd.

Gunther was backstage, complaining to Nick Aldis. That led to Aldis saying it was simple for Gunther, but Gunther overplayed his hand. Gunther said you should be thankful that he’s here. Aldis left.
Carmelo Hayes vs. Ricky Saints
Melo and Ricky exchanged arm drags, and Melo connected with a dropkick. Ricky did his top rope walk, leading to a punch to the back. Melo trapped Ricky between the ropes, so Melo hit a springboard leg drop to the back. Melo hit a somersault dive over the top onto Ricky at ringside. They went on a break for some fans as the action continued, so I’ll take a break too.
Ricky was in control as the match returned from the break for some fans. They battled by the turnbuckle as Melo hit a front suplex off the turnbuckle. Melo went up top and hit a Frog Splash for two. Ricky hit a forearm to the head, followed by a Michinoku Driver for a two count. Ricky applied a chinlock, Melo broke free with two superkicks, a light kick, and another superkick. Melo hit a springboard clothesline to knock Ricky down. Melo hit a spinning slam into the mat called Dirty Diana (like La Mistica) for a two count. They battled over inside cradle attempts. Ricky hit a spinning spinebuster for a two count. Ricky went for the DDT off the ropes, but Melo countered it and hit a First 48 double knee attack for two. Ricky managed to hit his Revolution DDT for a two count. Ricky went for a lift, Melo fought out of it and Ricky sent Melo face first into the turnbuckle. Ricky tried a rollup with his foot on the ropes, but Charles Robinson saw it and stopped the count. Melo did a ROLLUP OF DEATH for the 1…2…feet on the ropes without seeing it…and 3. It went about 12 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Carmelo Hayes
Analysis: ***1/4 They are talented guys who worked well together. Ricky tried to cheat, the referee stopped it, so Melo cheated, and the referee never saw it, and got the win. It was a clever way to give Melo a win while Ricky is 1-2 on SmackDown. It feels like there will be a rematch between them again down the road.
Royce Keys was shown getting ready when R-Truth walked up to him. Truth thanked Keys for helping them with MFTs. Truth invited Keys to join the new Judgment Day. Keys left. R-Truth’s WWE Tag Team Championship partner, Damian Priest, said he didn’t trust Keys yet. Truth mentioned he got hurt by the MFTs last week, and Truth admitted that Priest was right. Priest said at least he knows Truth can’t get hurt this week. Priest left for his match.
(Commercial)
The great Danhausen was featured in a room with some weapons to help him with his cloning experiment. Danhausen had something on a bed and it was covered. Danhausen had a very old computer that he was using.
Damian Priest vs. Tama Tonga
Priest hit a jumping back elbow to knock Tama down. Priest delivered a kick that knocked Tama out of the ring. Priest ran around the ring, but Tama was ready to knock him down after jumping off the steps. They went on a break there for some fans, as I’ll take a break too.
There was a Razor’s Edge attempt by Priest, but Tama countered it by jumping on Priest’s back. Tama hit a dragon screw leg whip and a jumping DDT for two. After a slap by Tama, Priest came back with punches and a shoulder tackle. Priest hit a spinning kick to the head, along with a flatliner. Priest hit a jumping elbow smash and a Broken Arrow got a two count. Tama bailed to the floor, so Priest went after him with a shoulder tackle over the commentary table. Back in the ring, Tama tripped up Priest by the turnbuckle and Tama hit a neckbreaker for two. Priest wanted a lift, but Tama hit some elbow smashes, so Priest hit a clothesline. Priest hit South of Heaven for the pinfall win after about 10 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Damian Priest
Analysis: *** This was a competitive match that could have gone either way, but I’m not surprised that Priest got the win since he’s a former World Champion that is a bigger name than Tama at this point. Tama is a good worker who had some cool counters in this match, but he wasn’t going to beat Parker in LA of all places.
After the match, Talla Tonga arrived with a boot to the face. Solo Sikoa joined Talla in the ring and Solo hit the Samoan Spike on Priest. Nobody helped Priest since R-Truth was not cleared this week.
Analysis: It will likely set up a WWE Tag Team Title match.
Sami Zayn was backstage complaining to somebody. The camera panned down to show Johnny Gargano lying on the equipment case. Zayn kept on complaining about how if you wrestled great, the fans were always on your side, and that’s what mattered. Candice LeRae complained about how she was entitled to a husband who did more than lie around. Zayn told Gargano to remember who he is and don’t let anybody take that away from you, ever. Zayn left while Gargano said nothing, but he did move his eyes.
Jade Cargill and friends were up next.
(Commercial)
Let’s Hear from Jade Cargill
The former WWE Women’s Champion Jade Cargill made her entrance for a promo. Jade was joined by Michin and B-Fab. Jade said when her music hits, everybody seems to get real quiet. Jade said that she’s going to take the WWE Women’s Title back at Clash in Italy. Jade was about to say more when there was an interruption by Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss.
Analysis: On Rhea Ripley’s Instagram, it seemed pretty clear that she’s in Australia with her husband, so that’s why she wasn’t there this week.
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss showed up to say that last week, Jade finally pissed her off, so let’s play. Jade wondered where Ripley was while calling Flair and Bliss the backup dancers. Flair said they are there to do Jade’s dirty work. Flair told Jade to take a seat and take some notes on the match. Jade called out a referee and Jade told Flair to entertain her.
Analysis: The match was already announced, so it was just some basic promos to exchange words. This show is too long at three hours.
(Commercial)
A video aired about Blake Monroe coming to SmackDown.
Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss vs. Michin & B-Fab (w/Jade Cargill)
Michin got some offense early on with a spin kick. Flair came back using her knees for leg scissors around the throat and flipping Michin across the ring. Flair told Jade to suck it. Bliss tagged in against B-Fab with a knee attack to the back. After a Michin distraction, B-Fab attacked with some punches. Bliss jumped off the turnbuckle, B-Fab caught Bliss and hit a spinning slam into the mat for two. That led to a break for some fans as the action continued and I’ll take a break too.
The heel side was still in control of Bliss. Michin tried a move, but Bliss hit a Tornado DDT. Flair got the hot tag against Michin and Flair hit a cross body block off the top. Flair hit chops on both women. Flair hit a running clothesline. Flair hit a fallaway slam on B-Fab and an Exploder Suplex on Michin across the ring. Flair taunted Jade, so Jade distracted and B-Fab pulled Flair off the turnbuckle. Michin tagged in with a missile dropkick. B-Fab was back in for a double team kick on Flair for two. Flair was able to tag out and bring Bliss in, even though B-Fab didn’t see it. Flair kicked Michin off the apron and kicked B-Fab in the ring. Bliss hit the Sister Abigail DDT for a two count because Jade pulled Bliss out of the ring and Jade punched Bliss, so that led to the DQ. It went about 9 minutes.
Winners by disqualification: Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
Analysis: **1/2 It felt like an average tag team match. I think Flair and Bliss should have won in about five minutes. Instead, it went a few minutes longer, and I wasn’t that interested in it.
After the match, Jade sent Bliss into the barricade. Flair sent Michin over the commentary table to the floor. Flair hit a running boot to knock B-Fab out of the ring. Flair wanted to fight Jade, but Jade didn’t want it.
The Fatal Influence trio of Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid were in the locker room while Cathy Kelley showed up for an interview. Henley and Reid talked about how talented they are. Jayne said that loyalty is their currency and it will pay off when they are draped in gold. Jayne said it’s only a matter of time until the other women fall at the feet of Fatal Influence.
Up next is a video recap of the continuation of the Roman Reigns-Jacob Fatu story.
(Commercial)
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss were talking backstage about what happened out there. Flair said last week she tried to be a team player with Ripley, and where is she this week? Bliss said they were outnumbered. Flair admitted she isn’t the kind of person who needs help. Bliss said Rhea owes them one. They left.
A video aired that recapped Jacob Fatu attacking Roman Reigns on Raw.
Royce Keys was getting ready backstage when Solo Sikoa approached Keys and said he could help Keys beat Gunther. Solo told Keys he should follow him. Solo said he’d hate to see what happened to Shinsuke happen to Keys. Keys said he’s got this. Solo said that Jacob said the same thing.
Gunther made his entrance for the main event.
(Commercial)
Next week on SmackDown: Talla Tonga vs. Shinsuke Nakamura.
Saturday Night’s Main Event on May 23rd has this lineup:
* Intercontinental Championship: Penta vs. Ethan Page
* World Tag Team Championships: Austin Theory & Logan Paul vs. The Street Profits
* Charlotte Flair, Rhea Ripley & Alexa Bliss vs. Jade Cargill, Michin & B-Fab
Analysis: That last match was just added to the show. I can see Jade winning to give her momentum before her WWE Women’s Title rematch against Jade at Clash in Italy.
Royce Keys made his entrance for the main event in Royce’s first WWE TV main event match.
Undisputed WWE Championship #1 Contender’s Match: Gunther vs. Royce Keys
Gunther had a tough time moving Keys early on in the match, so he grabbed a headlock. Keys knocked down Gunther with a shoulder tackle. Gunther chopped Keys a few times, but Keys blocked a chop attempt. Gunther hit a big boot, and then Keys caught Gunther with a running powerslam for a two count. Gunther left the ring, so Keys sent him into the barricade two times in a row. Gunther told Keys to do something and Keys sent Gunther over the commentary table. The show went on a break for some fans as the action continued. Keys broke the referee’s count two times. Gunther sent Keys hard into the steel steps. The referee checked on Keys and started the count. Gunther dominated the action during the break for some fans.
There were about ten minutes left in the show as Gunther chopped Keys down. Keys finally got some offense with a suplex across the ring. Gunther hit two knees to the ribs along with a hard chop to the chest. Keys was on the floor, Gunther for a kick from the apron, but Keys caught Gunther. Keys slammed Gunther three times onto the hood of the commentary table. Back in the ring, Gunther hit a boot to the face. Gunther for a kick, Keys moved and Gunther hit the turnbuckle. Gunther came back with a clothesline. Gunther went up top, but Keys countered that with a superplex off the middle turnbuckle for a two count. Keys hit some light clotheslines and Gunther used his momentum to apply the dreaded Sleeper hold. Keys was able to get back up with a back body drop. Solo Sikoa was watching at ringside. Keys hit a flying clothesline. Keys hit Gunther with a few strikes that knocked Gunther down with another clothesline. Keys splashed Gunther two times. Gunther applied a Sleeper again, but Keys was back up to get out of that with elbows. Keys hit a shoulder tackle that sent Gunther into the referee, who was knocked down. Solo slid Keys a steel chair and told Keys to use it. Keys threw the chairs at Solo instead. Gunther hit Keys in the back of the head. Gunther hit a running clothesline to the back of the head. Gunther hit a Powerbomb into a stacked pin on Keys for the pinfall win after 15 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Gunther
Analysis: ***1/2 It was a pretty good TV main event, but not at the level of some of Gunther’s best matches. Keys is solid in the ring, but not known for having the best matches. I wish I could say the fans were loud for this match, but they didn’t seem to care at all. They did react to some of the things at the end of the match. Anyway, Gunther was obviously winning here, and there was never any doubt about that. A Powerbomb on a bigger guy like Keys is impressive.
That win by Gunther means he’ll challenge Cody Rhodes for the WWE Title at Clash in Italy.
After the match, Gunther spoke into the camera about how there’s nothing Cody can do. That led to Cody grabbing Gunther from behind and hitting a Cross Rhodes on him. Cody welcomed Gunther to SmackDown. The WWE Champion Rhodes stood tall to end the show.
Analysis: I think the Cody Rhodes-Gunther match at Clash in Italy has a chance for a WWE Title change, but I’m not predicting that yet. I think Cody will hold the title until at least SummerSlam, so no title changes before that.

Final Thoughts on WWE SmackDown
It was more of the same from SmackDown. Another average show, but a bit better than previous weeks. I liked the first 30 minutes, with Trick Williams getting a lot of spotlight time, including a promo and a match. Some parts of this episode dragged, as usual for SmackDown. The match quality used to be better, and now it’s mostly average, with great matches delivered rarely.
The Cody Rhodes-Gunther match at Clash In Italy was obviously going to happen. I don’t mind that Gunther had to win a match to officially make it happen.
I feel like SmackDown is really missing Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre a lot post-WrestleMania. I like that Gunther is on the blue brand, but the absences of Orton and McIntyre definitely hurt.
