Report: WWE Expected to Debut the “Wild Card Title” on Raw Tonight

TJR Wrestling

There’s a new championship that is expected to be announced tonight on WWE Monday Night Raw in Albany, NY. It was first mentioned at Money in the Bank last night when WWE informed us that Mick Foley was going to introduce the title.

The name of this new title is the “Wild Card Title” according to the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer. It is debuting because Vince McMahon created the “Wild Card Rule” a few weeks ago that will allow four Raw superstars to appear on Smackdown every week and vice versa.

The idea behind the title is to make it like the old WWF Hardcore Title that was defended 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when Crash Holly was the champion in 2000 and then it continued on for a few years.

It was also reported by Meltzer that when the idea of a new championship was pitched to Vince McMahon, he loved the idea, so that’s why we’ll see the beginning of this new title tonight. The title is expected to be defended across all of WWE’s brands or at least Raw and Smackdown.

The reason they are using Mick Foley is that the original idea for the Hardcore Title was to put it on Foley back in 1998. By the time they adopted the Hardcore Title rule, Foley had retired. I write about it every week in the WWF in 2000 section here on TJRWrestling. The 24/7 rule started with Crash Holly, but WWE may try to tell their own history by saying it was Foley that started it. The Hardcore Title’s 24/7 rule officially started in February 2000.

Here’s a rundown of all the current titles on WWE’s main roster Raw and Smackdown shows.

Universal Title (Raw) – Held by Seth Rollins

WWE Title (SD) – Held by Kofi Kingston

Raw Women’s Title – Held by Becky Lynch

Smackdown Women’s Title – Held by Bayley

Raw Tag Team Titles – Held by Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder

Smackdown Tag Team Titles – Held by Daniel Bryan and Rowan

United States Title (Raw) – Held by Rey Mysterio

Intercontinental Title (SD) – Held by Finn Balor

Women’s Tag Team Titles (All brands) – Held by The IIconics duo of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce

We can now add the Wild Card Title to the list. What does it look like? We’ll find out on Raw. I’ll have a live Raw Deal tonight to find out along with you.

TJR Thoughts: I’m not a fan of adding a 10th title to Raw and Smackdown, but that’s WWE these days. They think more is good when in fact, less titles would be better.
