WWE Star Criticized For Leaving AEW

Tony Khan AEW

A particular wrestling observer believes one WWE superstar may regret leaving AEW, considering how his WWE career has gone so far.

Following a five-year run in AEW, Rey Fenix was finally let go from his contract in early March. That led to Rey’s WWE debut in early April, when he joined his older brother, Penta, in the promotion.

Fenix’s AEW departure was widely reported because he was unhappy with the company and had been essentially benched by All Elite Wrestling owner Tony Khan since last July. Khan doesn’t seem to have a problem paying contracted talent to stay at home, such as Britt Baker and Chris Jericho, among others.

While WWE has acknowledged that Fenix and Penta are brothers, they have been kept apart since Penta is a Raw guy and Fenix is a SmackDown guy. For whatever reason, WWE is waiting until the right time to put the brothers together.

Penta is in the Intercontinental Title hunt constantly on the Raw brand, while Rey Fenix has been teaming up with Andrade, who is gone from WWE. This past week on SmackDown, Fenix teamed up with Shinsuke Nakamura. Unfortunately for Penta, his team with Nakamura failed to beat the MFT team of JC Mateo & Tama Tonga, thanks to interference from Talla Tonga.

Dave Meltzer Thinks Rey Fenix Made The Wrong Move By Leaving AEW

On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer blasted WWE’s booking of Rey Fenix and made the point that he should have stayed where he was in AEW.

“I thought when they left that Penta probably would do better in WWE, and that Fenix would not do better.

“They’re brothers and they wanna be close and everything, but I thought, ‘Penta go, seriously, you’re better off in WWE, but don’t push to go together.’

“And Fenix was so gung ho, and they’re brothers and everything, but I thought that Fenix was making the wrong move. Now, I think it’s more and more clear that he did.

“Dragon Lee as well. I’m not as sure with Dragon Lee. Dragon Lee, if he was in AEW, he would be in the LFI with Dralistico and Rush, because those are his brothers, he’d be in that group.

“That group is just kinda there, just like Dragon Lee in the LWO is just kinda there. Sometimes I’ll go like, ‘Look at how well Bandido’s doing compared to Dragon Lee,’ because they’re similar talents, but Bandido does have more charisma of the two.

“I’m not as sure about Dragon Lee and I think that Dragon Lee is kinda an even one, it’s still debatable, the jury’s not out. But Rey Fenix from day one I’ve expected this and I think it has come true.

“Was he gonna get a big push in AEW? No. But the difference is, he would be in hellacious matches in AEW, and he’s really not in WWE.” (H/T Wrestletalk)

Regarding Dragon Lee, he just won the WWE World Tag Team Titles with AJ Styles on Raw last Monday night, so things seem to be going well for him.
