WWE SmackDown Sees Carmelo Hayes Tested in U.S. Title Open Challenge
Carmelo Hayes has been on a dominant run with the United States Championship on WWE SmackDown ever since he won the title on the final SmackDown of last year.
He continued with the US title open challenge that Sami Zayn introduced with his run, and it was continued by both Ilja Dragunov and Carmelo Hayes.
After defeating Dragunov for the belt once again last week, Hayes announced another open challenge for tonight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as he looked to defend the title once again.
Rey Fenix answered the open challenge on WWE SmackDown
The Luchador became the latest person to try and dethrone Carmelo Hayes as he answered tonight’s open challenge on Friday Night SmackDown. Fenix also tried to win the belt when Zayn was champion, but failed to defeat him.
Both men pushed each other to their limit as they fought an entertaining but highly physical match. Both Hayes and Fenix came close to winning on multiple occasions, but neither of them gave way.
Fenix looked to put Hayes away after a flurry of attacks, but was stopped in his tracks by a First 48 from the champion. He went up to the top rope and hit him with the Nothing But Net to retain the WWE US Championship.
