WWE: Sami Zayn Talks Rivalry With Kevin Owens & NXT Takeover Match vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Former NXT Champion Sami Zayn was recently interviewed by United Kingdom news source The Mirror. During the interview, Zayn talked about what he thinks the main advantage his feud with Kevin Owens has over other feuds. Zayn also talked about his classic match with Shinsuke Nakamura during NXT TakeOver: Dallas this past April.

On what makes his feud with Kevin Owens special compared to other rivalries currently in WWE.

“Well, I think that’s one of the main advantages this rivalry has over a lot of the rivalries in the WWE currently, especially because the roster is so new. Because of this ‘New Era’ there has been such a turnover of new faces. There’s not a lot of genuine history that goes back that deep between all of these people. You know, many people on the roster I’ve actually known for many years, like Cesaro, Seth Rollins, Luke Harper… a lot of them I’ve known for over 10 years, so there is built-in history there that you can go back to, Kevin more than anyone. It’s a very… I don’t want to call it a twisted relationship but when you’ve been in a relationship with anybody for that long there are going to be some real ups and downs and actual genuine reasons to fight. And I think that’s maybe what fans find captivating.”

On his match with Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: Dallas.

“It was a real honour. A lot of has been said about that match and it really was a special night. I think it was one of those nights when the stars just aligned and the story and everything couldn’t have been better. It was the biggest stage NXT has had, which was WrestleMania weekend. Takeover: Dallas was huge, with 10,000 people there and they were so, so excited to see him in his first match, and there was kind of an unspoken air about the whole thing that this would probably be my last match with NXT. So that dynamic alone made it very, very special, and then on top of that he happens to be one of the best in the world in the ring. So we had what I thought was a really great match and a good fight and we took fans on an emotional ride, which is always the goal. That match meant a lot to me, for so many reasons, I’m really, really proud of it. And I just can’t wait to see how Nakamura continues to thrive not only in NXT but in the WWE and hopefully we can lock horns again in the ring. I will be looking forward to it when that day comes.
