John Cena Wanted To Main Event WrestleMania With AEW Star
WWE veteran says John Cena wanted to main event WrestleMania with AEW star Claudio Castagnoli.
Before working with AEW, Castagnoli wrestled in WWE for almost a decade. He was popularly known as Cesaro in the Stamford-based promotion. He left WWE after his contract expired in February 2022.
It was reported that he was offered a contract extension, which he did not sign. Instead, he chose to walk away from the promotion. A few months later, in June 2022, he made a surprise debut for AEW at Forbidden Door as a replacement for Bryan Danielson against Zack Sabre Jr.
Paul Heyman was a special guest on the latest episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet, where he discussed talents he had worked with in the past. One such talent was Claudio Castagnoli (FKA Cesaro).
John Cena Wanted To Face Cesaro At WrestleMania Main Event
While discussing him, Heyman recalled that John Cena once told Vince McMahon that he wanted to wrestle Cesaro in the main event of WrestleMania. Heyman said that Cesaro checked all the boxes to be a top star in the company. Everyone wanted to go up against him during his prime WWE days, even John Cena.
He then recalled the time John Cena returned to the Gorilla Position after working with Cesaro on television. He was so impressed with the Swiss wrestler that he told Vince McMahon he wanted to main-event WrestleMania against Cesaro.
“You look at Cesaro, and he checked — especially at that moment in time, he checked every box to become a top star. Everyone who got into the ring with him came back into Gorilla saying, ‘Give me him.’ Everyone.
I remember John Cena worked with him on television and came back and looked at Vince (McMahon) and said, ‘I could main event WrestleMania with him,’ and probably could have and should have.”
Cesaro and John Cena have faced each other multiple times on WWE Raw in 2014 and 2015 in singles as well as multi-man matches.
