A wrestling legend who wasn’t fond of Hulk Hogan said some harsh things about the Hulkster on a new Netflix documentary.

Hulk Hogan was a legendary figure who will always be remembered as one of the most famous pro wrestlers of all time. Sadly, Hulk Hogan passed away in July 2025 due to cardiac arrest, along with other health issues. The Hulkster was 71.

Like him or hate him, there’s no denying that Hogan had a massive impact on the business of pro wrestling, whether he was a babyface who was cheered or one of the biggest villains with the New World Order.

While Hogan had a lot of success in pro wrestling, he was disliked by many people in the business and by fans. There were multiple reasons for the dislike, including racist comments he made and his reputation for holding down other wrestlers to prevent them from taking his spot at the top of the card. Hogan was also known for fabricating a ridiculous number of stories about events in his life and career.

A new 4-part Netflix documentary titled “Real American” premiered this week, featuring Hogan’s final interviews before his death. There were also many interviews with people close to Hogan, as well as with some who didn’t like him.

Bret “Hitman” Hart is a 2-time WWE Hall of Famer, like Hogan (three times each if you count matches that have been inducted), but the two men were not the closest of friends. They worked together in the same company in WWE from the mid-1980s until Hogan’s departure in 1993, and then again years later in WCW for a few years.

During the documentary, Hart recalled a story in which he approached Hogan backstage and was treated rudely, even though he had expected Hogan to be happy for him when Hart became WWE Champion.

“I was different than Hulk Hogan. Hulk Hogan was Elvis Presley. I was the Robert De Niro of wrestling. I always thought that Hulk would be happy for me.”

“I remember walking up to him. I was like, ‘Hey, Terry.’ I stood up with my hand out to shake his hand for about 30 seconds, but he wouldn’t even look at me and just kept talking to (Brutus) Beefcake.”

Hogan responded in the documentary.

“I can’t imagine doing that intentionally,” Hogan said. “Maybe I had an off day, maybe I was drunk, maybe I was high. I don’t know. I don’t know what to tell you, but it wouldn’t have been intentional.”

That led Hart to say he knew how Hogan viewed him at that point.

“I knew right then. I got the belt and I got what he wants, and I’m the enemy now.”

Bret Hart Still Hates What Hulk Hogan Did At WrestleMania 9

A match that Bret Hart has been complaining about for over three decades is the WrestleMania 9 main event in 1993. Hart defended the WWE Championship against the mighty Yokozuna, who had Mr. Fuji as the manager.

At the conclusion of the match, Yoko was face down on the mat, and Bret applied the Sharpshooter. Ref Earl Hebner checked on him. Meanwhile, Mr. Fuji took out his Fuji Dust and threw it into Bret’s eyes. The referee didn’t see it, of course, so Yokozuna covered Bret to win the WWE Championship.

Post match, Hulk Hogan ran to the ring to tell the referee that Yokozuna cheated. Mr. Fuji Yokozuna was issuing a challenge to Hulk. The crowd was yelling for Hulk to accept the challenge. Bret Hart told him to go for it. Hogan slid into the ring for the match. He was in his “street clothes” or whatever you would call that outfit he was wearing.

Hulk Hogan slid into the ring, and Fuji was in the ring. Yoko held Hogan, Fuji threw the dust, Hulk ducked, and the dust went into Yoko’s face. Hulk hit a clothesline. He followed it up with a leg drop. Hulk won via pinfall in 21 seconds to be WWE Champion again. That’s how Wrestlemania 9 ended.

On the Hogan documentary, Hart summed it up this way.

“Came up with such a phony bulls*** match. The kind of match that Hulk would dream up. Hulk Hogan came out like the hero. ‘Yeah, he’s my friend, coming out to run to my rescue.’ ‘Go get him, Hulk. Go in there and win my belt. Win it for me.’ It sucked.

He was a good guy once upon a time. But in the end, he was a backstabbing, knife-wielding piece of shit.”

Hulk Hogan claimed he used his stroke with Vince McMahon to get the WWE Title.

“I had that Hogan stroke back then. Bonds bonded at the hip. I can pull the plug on certain things or certain people. Vince ultimately made the decision for Hulk to win the title at Mania.”

Bret Hart has also spoken at length about how he was betrayed by Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon during the same period in 1993, when Hart believed Hogan would put him over for the WWE Title. It never happened.
