When WWE Wanted Finn Balor To Bring Back The Demon

The Demon Finn Balor

A new report has shed light on when WWE was planning for Finn Balor to bring back his Demon character and why those plans were shelved.

Finn Balor has been part of The Judgment Day alongside Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley since the night after Hell In A Cell 2022 when Balor was part of a team alongside AJ Styles and Liv Morgan that lost to the group. As a result of Balor joining, the group then turned on their de facto leader Edge, attacking him and vanquishing him from the faction.

Since then Edge has been at war with the group and that took its latest turn at Elimination Chamber when Edge teamed up with his wife Beth Phoenix to defeat Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley in a tag team match. However, issues between Balor and Edge were originally set to have taken a much darker turn before that.

A report in December noted that Edge was set to face Finn Balor at the Royal Rumble in a Hell In A Cell bout, but that plan was nixed. Fightful Select has reported that the plan for that match was for Balor to resurrect his Demon character. The report notes that some sources felt the return of that character wasn’t right given Balor’s current character in The Judgment Day while some felt the match “needed the extra buzz” of The Demon. Nevertheless, the match didn’t happen at the Rumble.

The last time Balor wrestled as The Demon was at Extreme Rules in 2021 when he unsuccessfully challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship.

Finn Balor attacked Edge on Raw in Ottawa after the WWE Hall of Famer missed out on becoming US Champion against Austin Theory. The two stars could yet meet in a one-on-one match at the two-night WrestleMania 39, whether that would be a Hell In A Cell bout or feature The Demon remains to be seen.
