WWE Champion Cody Rhodes Admits Addiction: “I’m Not Afraid To Tell Anybody”
Cody Rhodes has an addiction, and he’s not shying away from admitting it.
Rhodes is in his third reign as the Undisputed WWE Champion, which began after his victory over Drew McIntyre on the March 6 episode of SmackDown.
Soon after, The American Nightmare began a feud with Randy Orton, who turned on him during their contract signing segment for their WrestleMania 42 clash.
At the Show of Shows, the former mentor-protege duo went to war, with Pat McAfee playing his role in ensuring that Orton won the championship for the 15th time.
However, it was not to be, as Rhodes came out on top after hitting The Viper with his Cross Rhodes finisher.
After the match, Orton blindsided Cody Rhodes before taking him out with the banned punt kick. 24 hours later, Rhodes made a brief appearance on Raw, where he sported a gnarly black eye courtesy of his WrestleMania opponent.
Cody Rhodes Reveals His Addition To The Top Spot
Amid Cody Rhodes’ orbital injury, not many viewers expected him to show up on Raw, but rather take time off to recuperate. So, it was naturally a surprise when he came out and confronted CM Punk.
Rhodes continued making appearances on SmackDown while carrying the injury.
While speaking to WWE commentator Joe Tessitore recently, the 40-year-old explained why it was important for him to be on television so soon after suffering the injury.
Cody revealed that making regular appearances came as part of being a major champion. Moreover, he was addicted to the top spot.
I’m addicted to the top spot. I’m not afraid to tell anybody that. I’ll be here every week and I’ll see this team every week. It’s just, it’s not a matter of who’s right or wrong, it’s my preference. [H/T: Ringside News]
Rhodes also revealed that despite leaving WrestleMania 42 as the champion, he did not feel like one due to the post-match attack by Randy Orton. He claimed that SmackDown’s latest recruit and Rhodes’ friend, Ricky Saints, helped lift his spirit.
Cody Rhodes Faces Gunther At Clash In Italy
Cody Rhodes is showing no signs of stopping and is set to defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther at Clash in Italy.
A few weeks after winning his WrestleMania match against Seth Rollins, Gunther was moved to SmackDown and immediately positioned as Rhodes’ next challenger.
The Ring General is a former 2-time World Heavyweight Champion, but has yet to win the undisputed title.
Both men have been feuding for a few weeks, with Gunther often getting the upper hand. On more than one occasion, he has applied the chokehold to leave Cody lying in the ring.
Gunther has also been of the opinion that competing in Europe will give him an advantage over his rival because he believes that it is his home turf.
On May 29, both superstars came face-to-face on the SmackDown taping in Barcelona, Spain, where they exchanged words ahead of their high-octane clash on Sunday (May 31).
Gunther reminded Rhodes that he had promised and retired 3 wrestlers since last year. He also promised to take the Undisputed Championship from Rhodes in Turin, Italy.
