Update On CM Punk Following Surgery

CM Punk speaking to crowd

AEW President Tony Khan has admitted that CM Punk’s recent injury is a “setback”, but is optimistic the AEW World Champion will be back soon.

At Double or Nothing, CM Punk overcame Hangman Adam Page to capture the AEW World Championship. This marked the first time he had won gold since his 434-day reign as the WWE Heavyweight Champion that spanned from 2011 to 2013.

Unfortunately, the celebrations were short-lived as only days later on Rampage, Punk revealed that he had a “broken wheel” and needed to take time away for surgery. Despite thinking he would have to relinquish his newly won championship, it was announced that an interim champion will be crowned and they will have to face Punk when he makes his return.

On the June 8th episode of Dynamite, Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur shared the positive news that Punk’s surgery had been a success.

Ahead of the show, Tony Khan made an appearance on Busted Open Radio, The AEW President admitted that CM Punk’s injury was a setback, but he’s already looking forward to him being back in action.

“It is a setback, but we’re really excited to get CM Punk back. He’s going to have surgery here quickly and I’m very nervous, but pretty optimistic because he’s going to be seeing one of the top doctors in the entire world and someone really renowned in sports medicine. We were fortunate to get him in quickly. We’re excited to get him back.”

In the meantime, the new Interim AEW World Champion will be crowned at the Forbidden Door supershow the company is holding alongside NJPW. Jon Moxley has already stamped his ticket to the title match after he defeated Kyle O’Reilly in the main event of Dynamite.

At Forbidden Door, the former AEW World Champion will face the winner of a clash at NJPW Dominion between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Hirooki Goto on June 12th.
