Steve Austin Wishes WWE Used Attitude Era Star Better
Steve Austin says WWE didn’t use Attitude Era star Goldust to his full potential.
Goldust was one of the most unique personas of the Attitude Era in wrestling history. He was very popular among fans for a long time. However, as time passed, WWE failed to evolve the character and keep him relevant in modern wrestling.
Eventually, Dustin Rhodes began feeling that his Goldust character had run its course. So he chose to part ways with WWE in April 2019 after requesting his release, which the company granted.
Steve Austin Says Goldust Was A “Natural” Inside The Ring
Speaking in a recent interview with SI’s The Takedown, Steve Austin stated that WWE should have never let Goldust go. Austin praised Rhodes, saying that he had natural talent for the wrestling business and was one of the greatest sellers in the ring, much like his legendary father, Dusty Rhodes.
Steve Austin added that the Goldust character was something fans found very entertaining, and WWE should have built the character more. He believed that Dustin Rhodes could have carried the Goldust persona for a long time and wished that WWE had used him better.
Steve Austin said:
“He was just good, because he was just dam* good. And that’s just the way it is for some people. The second generation helped him and he just happened to be a great athlete. He’s a big guy and just can move like a cat for the size that he was. And he had it up here (in the brain). He knew as a babyface when he needed to shine. He had fire. He sold well because, obviously, his father (Dusty Rhodes) is one of the great sellers of all time.
“You’ve got to draw some emotion from those people. He was good, because he was dam* good. That was just natural talent there. When I came into WWF back in the day, because of our friendship, and we weren’t calling each other and hanging out, but we started riding together and they had lit up the Goldust character. He was on fire. He had a ton of heat. Had they just left him in that role, it would have been interesting to see where his career would have gone, but I just always loved the guy.”
Dustin Rhodes is signed to AEW and is currently recovering from double knee replacement surgery. He is expected to be back in action soon.
