A recent comment by Roman Reigns led to some interesting rumors about his WWE future.

WrestleMania 42 is finally upon us, with part one set for April 18th and part two on April 19th.

In the main event of WrestleMania Sunday, CM Punk will defend the World Heavyweight Title against the Men’s Royal Rumble winner, Roman Reigns. For Reigns, it will be his 11th WrestleMania main event match, while it will be Punk’s second.

As usual, around WrestleMania, a lot of big-time wrestlers do interviews to promote the event. While speaking with Michael Cole on WWE’s official YouTube channel, Reigns spoke about his place in the company.

“I bring this place back to relevancy. I reset the standard. I already set the standard, got screwed up. Somebody’s gotta come in and re-fix it. And that’s what I would do.”

When Cole asked Reigns what he would do if Punk wins, the Tribal Chief offered up this response.

“If I lose to CM Punk at WrestleMania, I don’t belong in the WWE anymore. I think if I were to lose on Sunday, I’d say my work is done.”

That led to speculation that Reigns is ready to move on from WWE in an even more limited role and pursue more roles in Hollywood, like the upcoming Street Fighter movie he is in.

There is good news for WWE fans, according to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson, who noted that the claims that Roman’s WWE contract is expiring are not accurate. Johnson was told that WWE is “purposely staying quiet in order to encourage conspiracy theories” leading into the Punk-Reigns match at WrestleMania 42.

It was added by Johnson that somebody with knowledge of the situation told PWInsider that even if Reigns’ contract were expiring, “it was all worked out with time to spare.”

What Reigns said was likely done to create some buzz. Many people are picking Reigns to beat Punk, but if Punk were to retain the title, then it would certainly raise some interesting questions.

Roman Reigns Felt His Life Changed In First WrestleMania Main Event

When Roman Reigns headlined WrestleMania 31 in 2015, he challenged Brock Lesnar for the WWE Title. While Reigns had wrestled in a few WrestleMania matches before that, this was his first singles match, and he was in the main event against one of the most successful WWE superstars of all time.

While looking back at his career, Roman Reigns cited that WrestleMania match as being a big one.

“It wasn’t my first one, but WrestleMania 31, when I faced Brock (Lesnar) and Seth (Rollins) cashed in. It didn’t end the way I wanted it to, but from that moment on, that showed me the importance of the main event of WrestleMania. My life changed. It was completely different after that night. The whole world looked at me differently.”

When ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith asked how the whole world looked at him differently, Reigns responded.

“I was a legitimate superstar at that point. I got the rub from Brock Lesnar. He was the greatest combat athlete at the time. He had done everything that he had done. And essentially using him as a platform for me – a stepping stone. It put me in a different stratosphere and it hasn’t been the same since.”

WrestleMania 42 will STREAM LIVE Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT on ESPN in the United States and Netflix everywhere else.
