Rey Mysterio Opens Up On Retirement Plans

Rey Mysterio has discussed some of his desires for what he would like to happen before he retires, as well as plans for his iconic mask.

Currently celebrating twenty years with WWE, Rey Mysterio made his debut for the company in July 2022. To mark the occasion, he will be main eventing this Monday’s edition of Raw, teaming with his son Dominik at the historic Madison Square Garden to face Damian Priest and Finn Balor.

Whilst the former WCW and WWE Champion has made it clear in the past that his intent is for his son to carry on the legacy by wearing a similar mask, he has now stated that he wants to hand the exact mask down when the time is right.

Speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, Rey Mysterio discussed how he wants to make sure everything is set for Dominik before he steps away from the squared circle, and part of that is making sure he’s ready to carry on the legacy.

My next goal is to eventually be able to look for a great plan of retirement. I also want to make sure my son is set. I’m really enjoying his evolution. We’re still seeing a lot of growth with Dominik. I always have to remind myself he hasn’t been doing this for very long. He’s doing very well, and I push him to do better every single time he’s in the ring, I want to hang up the mask down the road, and hopefully see Dominik carry that mask and continue with the Mysterio legacy.

Dominik Mysterio made his WWE debut at SummerSlam 2020, where he lost a critically-acclaimed Street Fight against Seth Rollins. Although unsuccessful that night, it was clear Mysterio’s star would rise quickly within the company, and so far includes one run as SmackDown Tag Team Champions alongside his father.
