Randy Orton: “Kayfabe Is Dead… I Kind Of Hate It”
Randy Orton has spoken up about WWE pulling the curtain on kayfabe.
WWE Unreal on Netflix is a series that gives the fans a deeper insight into how the company works, the backstage processes, and the creative discussions.
Giving fans access to this has been both criticized and praised. The primary criticism is that it breaks the illusion and doesn’t let fans look at rivalries as they should be perceived.
Randy Orton “hates” that kayfabe is dead
In the previous generations, WWE superstars committed to the act even outside WWE. A prime example is The Undertaker. He would wear his WWE gear even when he was off WWE hours and probably stepped out for a private errand. He committed to the role and ensured the illusion was not broken.
However, now, that’s broken. Ahead of Elimination Chamber, The Viper appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and discussed the situation.
At first, you think, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’ because there was a time when if you were working with a guy — I’m the bad guy, and he’s the good guy — we might be bros, but we wouldn’t ride together, even if we wanted to. We wouldn’t be seen in public together, especially not in the town we were wrestling in.
Nowadays, it’s not like that at all. Kayfabe is dead. It’s entertainment. We’re all superstars. I understand it — and I also kind of hate it. But I think it’s necessary.
Randy Orton will face LA Knight, Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams, Jey Uso, and Cody Rhodes in the Elimination Chamber men’s match. Whoever wins will challenge Drew McIntyre for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42.
