Paul Wight Admits Key Person Didn’t Know About Legendary WWE Moment
Paul Wight has shared an interesting story about one of his most famous moments as WWE’s Big Show.
Even though Paul Wight has worked behind the scenes in AEW for several years, he is best known in the pro wrestling world as the WWE legend, the Big Show.
Since Wight works for AEW, he hasn’t been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame yet, but he clearly has the resume to be there since he’s a former 4-time WWE World Champion and 2-time WCW World Champion, along with numerous other accolades throughout his 30+ year career in pro wrestling.
Standing at 7’0″ and over 400 pounds for most of his career, Paul Wight will always be remembered as one of the greatest giants in pro wrestling history.
During his legendary career, Paul Wight had many memorable moments in WWE, but one memory that fans will always remember is when he broke the ring with Brock Lesnar.
Whenever anybody talks about SmackDown history or ranks the best moments in the history of SmackDown, the June 12, 2003, edition of SmackDown is usually mentioned. This was during the era when SmackDown was taped on Tuesdays and aired on Thursdays, so it was taped on June 10th.
Taz Had No Idea Paul Wight (Big Show) And Brock Lesnar Were Breaking The Ring On WWE SmackDown
As the match went on, Paul Wight uncharacteristically went to the top rope, but he didn’t pull off a move from there. The WWE Champion Lesnar stopped Show and set him up for a superplex. When they hit the mat, the ring collapsed as both guys lay on the mat for several minutes, and the referee, Mike Chioda, literally bounced in the ring.
The fans were going crazy as the announcers, Michael Cole and Tazz (two Z’s in WWE), shouted with enthusiasm. Tazz yelled: “Holy S**t! What the hell!?!”
In a new interview with Sporf, Paul Wight spoke about how Tazz had no idea the ring-breaking spot was going to happen. Clearly, WWE liked his shocked reaction because they left it in the broadcast.
“Randy Savage used to talk all the time about a moment in time. It’s a moment in time. It was such a great thing because there were so many working things that went into that between positioning, between the ring actually had to be lifted on airbags so that the ring post could collapse without the weight.
We were on the top rope in the corner. That had to be reinforced because that was the only corner that was actually attached. The collapsing, the timing of when to let the ring break, when we hit, like the referee bump, everything was perfect, and the whole crowd went crazy.
Taz went crazy. Taz didn’t know that was going to happen. I think he cussed live on air, which was a really big thing back then. There was a natural visceral reaction, and that was one of those things like, yeah, I’m taking that to my grave. We got him.”
As he continued, Paul Wight spoke about other ring-breaking moments in WWE with Mark Henry and Braun Strowman.
“That was a good one, and then, you know, a couple of years later, you know, they want me to break the ring again with Mark Henry.
I’m like, ‘But why?’ They’re like, ‘It’s a new generation. They need to experience it too.’
So I’ve broken three rings, you know, and like Rock said, yeah, I’m the guy that breaks stuff. So that’s my career. I break rings. So that’s my that’s my accolade. I’m the guy that breaks stuff.” (H/T Fightful)
Whatever you want to call him, the “guy that breaks stuff” will always be remembered for creating that legendary moment.
