AEW Dynamite was off to an explosive start as the show opened up with one of the most heated rivalries on offer currently. The night began with a juicy clash between two former AEW World Champions.

Kenny Omega challenged Swerve Strickland for a match last week, where the winner would become the number one contender for the AEW World Championship.

Swerve accepted the challenge, but also asked Kenny to put his role as AEW EVP on the line, and The Cleaner agreed. The two rivals faced each other tonight in a brutal match.

Both of them wrestled an extremely hard-hitting match, where both men had moments where they held the advantage. Swerve pulled everything out of his bag to get the win tonight.

He low-blowed Omega when the referee wasn’t looking, executed a piledriver on the barricade, and also hit the stomp from the top rope, but none of it could keep Kenny down.

As the match progressed, Swerve began dominating for large parts of the fight, but Omega showed great resilience to remain in the bout. He came back in the match with a multitude of knee strikes and went for a One-winged Angel.

He tried to hit his finisher twice, but Sweve gauged his eyes to get out of it and hit him with the Vertebreaker, but Omega got his shoulder up at the last second. The Cleaner ultimately picked up the win with a third V-Trigger to Swerve, followed by the One Winged Angel. He not only retained his status as EVP, but also became the number one contender for the AEW World Title.
