Mercedes Mone Offered To Lose Major AEW Match
A new report has poured cold water on claims Mercedes Mone is determined to keep winning.
At AEW Grand Slam Mexico, Mercedes Mone claimed the CMLL Women’s World Championship with a win over Zeuxis. In addition, Mone already held the TBS Championship, Rev Pro Undisputed British Women’s Title, as well as the EWA Women’s Championship.
At All In Texas, Mone will also challenge “Timeless” Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s Title after winning the Owen Hart Cup.
The win on Dynamite was greeted with criticism as well as praise, with some fans pointing out that Mone is yet to lose a singles match since signing with AEW. However, that doesn’t mean she’s against it.
Mercedes Mone Was Open To Losing
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that Mone was open to losing to Athena in the Owen Hart Cup in order to set up a rematch at All In Texas. However, the status of another star meant the rematch was quickly off the table.
“Regarding Mercedes Mone not having lost in AEW since her debut, those close to her say she was willing to lose to Athena to build a rematch at All In,”
Meltzer added that the long-term plan for the show originally involved Mariah May, who would have faced “Timeless” Toni Storm. However, when it became clear that May would be leaving the company, it was decided to move Mone into that spot as it’s the biggest women’s match available.
“The original idea months back still involved Mariah May for the stadium show but obviously that was changed when May wasn’t going to sign a new deal, so they wanted to do the biggest match for women in the company on the biggest show,”
Mariah May wrestled her last match for AEW at Revolution in March, where she lost to her long-time rival Storm in a Hollywood Ending. The British star made her WWE debut three months later, debuting on the June 3 edition of NXT. She’s since been renamed Blake Monroe.
Meanwhile, Athena has admitted she could miss All In altogether, commenting in a recent interview that she doesn’t know if a match at the event is “in my stars.”
