Mastermind Behind Shawn Michaels’ WWE Contract Revealed
Shawn Michaels is a WWE lifer who had some help from family regarding his most recent contract.
As a 2-time WWE Hall of Famer, the “Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels is celebrated by many WWE fans as one of the greatest superstars of all time.
When it comes to match quality, Michaels is near the top of many people’s lists and likely will be for a long time, even though he retired as a full-time wrestler 16 years ago.
In his current role as WWE’s Senior Vice President of Talent Development, Creative, and the main booker of the NXT brand, the 60-year-old Michaels is helping to shape WWE’s future by being part of the team that develops many future WWE superstars.
During the “What’s Your Story?” with Stephanie McMahon podcast, the Heartbreak Kid spoke about how incredible his wife, Rebecca, is. The couple has a son and a daughter together.
“I know that sounds cliché to say, but you know, she really has—she, you know, put everything, every ounce of her life on hold and poured into those children every day and continues to do to this day. She supported me along the whole way, you know, and taking care of everything from a business standpoint behind the scenes, and continues to do it now.”
Michaels also revealed that Rebecca helped negotiate Michaels’ most recent WWE contract.
“I mean, you know, she’s the one that negotiated my last contract, you know what I mean?”
As he continued, Michaels made the point that Rebecca is good for him in terms of helping out his career decisions, and Stephanie gave her thoughts as well.
Michaels: “She’s just—and again, because I can’t—I’m a pushover, and when it comes, you know, to this place… You know, I have a love, a passion, and a loyalty to this place.”
McMahon: “But her loyalty and passion is to you—her husband.”
Michaels: “Nothing comes before us, and that’s the line that I have trouble drawing, and she doesn’t, so I let her handle it.” (H/T Ringsidenews)
Shawn Michaels Wanted To Keep Je’Von Evans In WWE NXT Longer
As the WWE NXT boss, Shawn Michaels has to utilize the talent on the brand and deal with things when the WWE main roster comes calling. In the last six months, NXT has lost many big names, including Je’Von Evans, Ethan Page, Oba Femi, Ricky Saints, Sol Ruca, Jacy Jayne, Joe Hendry, and numerous others.
Regarding Je’Von Evans, Shawn Michaels recalled talking to the WWE main roster creative team, which is led by his best friend Paul “Triple H” Levesque, and telling them he wanted Evans to stay in NXT longer. Evans, who is just 22 years old with a very bright future, never became NXT Champion but was featured heavily under Michaels’ leadership.
“Certainly, Je’Von obviously was somebody I had—you know, we—you know, I was begging for like, ‘Can we keep him for another six months?’ if not, you know, because we had every intention—he was kind of one of the last ones that they—you know—they were like, ‘Oh.’ I mean, because we, you know, from an NXT standpoint, we were in our minds going to obviously build around Je’Von for the next year, and that was kind of the model.”
“And they’re like, ‘Oh no, no, no. We’re taking him, too.’ Like, ‘Oh, oh,’ you know, and I pushed back a little bit, you know, and was like, ‘You know, should we—just six months?’ Like, ‘No.’ And like three? Like, ‘No.’ And I’m like, ‘All right, so fair enough.’”
Losing talent to the main roster is something Michaels will always have to deal with, and it’s also reflective of doing a good job running NXT.
