John Cena Drops CM Punk Bombshell Following WWE Retirement

John Cena retired from in-ring competition at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025. His last match was against Gunther, which he lost.

Cena had a legendary 23-year-long career, and one of his biggest rivals in WWE was Punk. The two stars have fought 15 televised matches over the course of their legendary rivalry. Cena has had seven wins while Punk has had six wins (with 1 draw and 1 no contest).

Their first televised match took place on the November 23, 2009 episode of WWE Raw. Their last televised match took place on June 28, 2025, at Night of Champions during Cena’s farewell tour.

John Cena Says CM Punk Is His “Wrestling Soulmate”

Following his WWE retirement, Cena recently made a huge statement about Punk while appearing at MEGACON Orlando 2026. He called The Second City Saint his “wrestling soulmate,” saying that they both have a lot in common.

“CM Punk, my wrestling soulmate. We share a lot of common ground, but I think we bring the best out of each other because we like to challenge each other.” (From 17:38)

At his MEGACON Orlando 2026 appearance, Cena reiterated that he has retired from the ring for good and intends to stay retired, confirming that he will never return to the ring.

“I am fully retired now,” said Cena. (14:35 – 14:37)

Meanwhile, CM Punk is on the road to WrestleMania 42. He is set to put his World Heavyweight Championship on the line against the 2026 men’s Royal Rumble winner, Roman Reigns, at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas on April 18–19.
