Cody Rhodes has been on the receiving end of boos from WWE fans in his current feud with Randy Orton.

Randy Orton won the Elimination Chamber match and is set to face Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship.

The Viper, however, brutally attacked Rhodes, who had been his long-time friend, following the contract signing for their match. This plan by WWE was to effectively turn Orton heel, as wrestling matches work best when there is a heel and a face in them.

But Orton turning heel means that he needs to get booed by the fans for his heel work, but instead, he is getting loud pops and cheers for the pain he has been inflicting on SmackDown to everyone, from Rhodes to Matt Cardona to musician Jelly Roll, all of whom are/were Randy’s good friends.

Orton only listens to the voices in his head now, and one mystery caller who is seemingly giving him advice and keeping him on his A-game going into WrestleMania 42.

Cody Rhodes Opens Up About Fans Booing Him And Cheering Randy Orton

Speaking on Busted Open, Cody Rhodes says that although he may have been affected by the boos from the crowd when he was younger, the fans’ booing him doesn’t affect him now.

He says he doesn’t take it personally and explains that there is no right or wrong way to be a fan. They can meet their emotional needs by cheering or booing whoever it is they feel like doing it for.

I don’t take it personally. I think maybe when I was younger I did. And certainly, there’s no absolute in that, I’m sure some things kind of slipped through the armor a bit and you feel it.

But my thought in terms of fans today, more than ever, is that we are out there, and whatever their emotional need is, if they need to cheer for you, if they need to cheer for him, if they need to yell at you – I can’t put a governor on that and I will not.

Tully Blanchard rules in terms of for me when he’d say, ‘Loudest the longest.’

I can’t be angry at them, whatever it is they need. If they’re cheering for Randy as he seeks 15 (world titles), even with the things he did, okay.

I’m not there to try and tell you wrong or right. There’s no wrong way to be a fan.

There are a number of reasons why fans could be cheering for Orton’s heel version instead of Cody Rhodes’ face. For one, WWE fans are likely feeling nostalgic with this version of The Apex Predator, which mirrors his legendary 2009 self.

Other reasons could include Orton gunning for his 15th World Title, which will put him in a special class of wrestlers like Triple H (14 titles), Ric Flair (16 titles), and John Cena (17 titles).
