A former AEW star competed in a major title match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event XLIV, but shockingly suffered a brutal loss as the champion retained his title.

Ethan Page made his WWE main roster debut on the April 20 episode of Monday Night RAW and, within weeks, had already inserted himself into the Intercontinental Championship picture. He earned his title shot by pinning Penta during a tag team match on the May 4 episode of RAW while teaming with Rusev.

That pinfall gave him all the momentum he needed heading into Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Penta retained the WWE Intercontinental Title in a brutal clash

Ethan Page came out aggressively at tonight’s SNME. The former AEW star countered a Penta springboard move with a dropkick in mid-air, took the fight to the outside, and gave Penta a back body drop onto the announce desk. He had the champion in genuine trouble. All Ego even went as far as removing multiple turnbuckle pads in desperation, trying anything to put Penta away.

It was not enough as Page ran into an exposed turnbuckle himself, and Penta immediately capitalized with a springboard Mexican Destroyer for the pinfall victory to retain the Intercontinental Championship.

Penta has now successfully defended the title seven times since winning it from Dominik Mysterio on the March 2 episode of Monday Night RAW. Page came close. The title match experience will matter going forward, but tonight belonged to Penta.
