Current WWE star Kofi Kingston was once on the verge of getting fired from the company.

Speaking on The Coach and Bro Show, ex-WWE personality Jonathan Coachman revealed that WWE had almost released Kingston back in the day.

Coachman shared that, along with being a backstage interviewer, he was also working in talent character development in the Stamford-based promotion. As a result, he spent a lot of time working with Kofi Kingston behind the scenes.

He stated that when Kofi got in WWE, he wanted to do a Jamaican accent character, hoping it would get him over in the company. However, the character didn’t gain much momentum, and he dropped it later.

WWE Almost Released Kofi Kingston Before New Day Success

At one point, WWE was very close to releasing him. Fortunately, the company later found a strong storyline for Kingston, adding him to The New Day, after which his popularity grew significantly.

Jonathan added that he is glad the Stamford-based promotion found something that clicked with Kingston’s character, allowing him to flourish in the storyline.

One of my day jobs in the WWE on the road was to do all the interviews. I also did character development. So, they would send guys in, and we’d work on promos and things, and then we’d send the tapes back to talent relations.

So, I’ll never forget Kofi Kingston would come in 2007, 2006, and he wanted to do this Jamaican accent character, and I remember him practicing, and he was committed to it, and he was like this is going to get me over and he was on the brink of just being out of the WWE. They didn’t have anything.

And I remember when we stopped working with him, I thought to myself I love this guy. He’s a good human being. He was dating his wife at the time, and then they, you know, didn’t even have the kids yet.

And I did not think that he was going to have a career in the WWE. Based on the work that I did with him. And guess what? That work didn’t work for him. Yeah. They found the New Day. They found the New Day. So, I’m so glad Kofi did that. (From 46:51 to 47:53)
