Cody Rhodes Ends Gunther’s 302-Day Streak Amid Controversy At WWE Clash In Italy
WWE hosted its first-ever Premium Live Event in Italy tonight as Clash In Italy aired live from the Inalpi Area in Turin. The promotion had lined up some exciting matches for the night as it looked to make history in Italy.
The night began with one of the most heated rivalries currently on television as the Ring General, Gunther, took on Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Both men have been fighting it out with one another over the last few weeks.
Tonight marked the first match between them since they met at Crown Jewel 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the American Nightmare emerged victorious to become the inaugural WWE Crown Jewel Champion.
The match was off to a hot start with both men looking to get the better of the other as they had their individual moments to shine. It was a hard-hitting affair that saw both men kick out of each other’s finishers.
The Undisputed WWE Title match ends in controversy
Gunther kicked out of the CrossRhodes and the Pedigree on a couple of occasions, while Cody didn’t stay down after being hit by a trademark powerbomb from the Ring General.
An evenly contested bout ultimately got to its end after Cody hit a Cody Cutter on Gunther and followed it up with two CrossRhodes to retain his title. The match seemed to end in confusion for everyone involved.
Gunther was seen arguing with the referee as he claimed that he had his foot under the ring rope, which meant a ropebreak, but Cody grabbed his leg up before the third count.
His loss against Cody marked the end of Gunther’s 302-day winning streak, making this his first loss since losing the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk at Night 1 of SummerSlam 2025.
