Brock Lesnar Accepts Cody Rhodes’ SummerSlam Challenge

Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar

Cody Rhodes finally got what he wanted, as Brock Lesnar attacked ‘The American Nightmare’ before accepting his challenge for SummerSlam.

It could have been much smoother sailing for Cody Rhodes since he made his return to WWE at WrestleMania 38. Despite his run of matches against Seth Rollins being extremely successful, he was forced away from the ring due to a pec injury which he received before his Hell In A Cell match. Returning at the Royal Rumble, many expected Rhodes to finally ‘complete the story’ and take the Undisputed WWE Heavyweight Championship from Roman Reigns, which turned out not to be the case.

Just 24 hours after this loss, Cody Rhodes entered another rivalry which runs to this day. After his tag partner on the night Brock Lesnar turned against him, the pair have been going backwards and forewards, with two singles match between them and one win a piece. Over recent weeks Rhodes has been goading ‘The Beast Incarnate’, trying to get another contest with him at SummerSlam.

That finally came to fruition on the 17th July 2023 edition of Monday Night Raw. With Cody Rhodes in front of his family in his home town of Atlanta, ‘The American Nightmare’ opened the show to address the crowd and try to get an answer from Lesnar. When Lesnar didn’t appear despite his music playing, Rhodes headed backstage only to be attacked by Lesnar with a steel chair. Brawling back to the ring, Lesnar hit an F5 and locked on the kimura, both right in front of Rhodes’ mother, before officially accepting the challenge for ‘The Hottest Show Of The Summer’.

Three matches are now confirmed for SummerSlam. Alongside this anticipated match, it has also been confirmed that Seth Rollins will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor, and Becky Lynch will take on Trish Stratus. Although not officially confirmed, a confrontation between Shayna Baszler and Ronda Rousey also seems to have set the pair on course for a match. SummerSlam takes place at Ford Field in Detroit on 5th August.
