Heading into the 2022 Royal Rumble, a new report has claimed that more surprising names from outside WWE are being considered for the 30-woman match.

On January 29th, WWE revealed several women who will take part in the 2022 Royal Rumble. The announcement included current WWE Superstars as well as former members of the roster and WWE Hall Of Famers The Bella Twins and Lita.

The most unexpected name announced for the annual spectacle was current IMPACT Knockouts Champion Mickie James. James was released from the company in April 2021 and has been outspoken about the company since then, revealing she they had returned her belongings in a trash bag.

A new report from Fightful Select has given more details on the surprise additions to the Rumble match. They say that the company has acted a lot earlier than usual in securing the names for the event and the wrestlers involved didn’t know that their participation would be announced when they were, which is said to have been done to help boost ticket sales for the event.

The report adds that Mickie James’ name in the scripts for the announcement showed the company was unsure if they would mention her championship status:

“(?) Impact Knockouts Champion (?)”

In the end, Pat McAfee did acknowledge that James was the current IMPACT Knockouts Champion on the show, something that is reportedly part of the agreed deal for James to appear between IMPACT Wrestling and WWE.

In a hint that there are more announcements to come, the report concludes by saying that “interesting” and “big” outside names have been pitched for the Rumble but it’s currently unknown if any of these names will appear.
