WWE: Wade Barrett Wants In On the Tag Team Division

TJR Wrestling

WWE Superstar Wade Barrett recently spoke with the popular British tabloid newspaper, The Sun, about the current state of his WWE career. In the interview, the former 5 time WWE Intercontinental Champion talks about really wanting to be involved in the tag team division and about taking his career in a direction it has never been before.

Why Barrett wants to enter into the tag team division & try something new:

“I would really like to go into the tag division. It isn’t something I’ve done very much in the past. Pretty much consistently since I’ve been with WWE in 2010 I’ve been the bad guy singles wrestler so I would like to do something a little different.”

Barrett comments on his short run with Stardust and who he’d like to team up with:

“I’ve always felt like I play off people well and I was hoping the run with Stardust might last a little bit longer. But going back, I know there’s a few guys that are kind of in the doldrums at the moment career-wise so maybe pairing up with someone new and trying to go in a completely different direction to what I’ve done before is the next step for me.”

Barrett feels that the New Day deserve some credit for taking the tag division to another level:

“The guys in that division have done a really good job in the last year or so. New Day especially, they’ve really spearheaded it in my opinion, so I’d love to be a part of it in some way, shape or form.”

Mark’s reaction:

This is great news for Barrett. He’s a wrestler that I feel like the WWE really dropped the ball with and every time I see him on TV I can’t help but say to myself, “this guy should be a main eventer.” However, it seems like the WWE just has zero plans on ever giving this guy a legitimate push. Bad News Barrett was getting over so they eliminate the gimmick all together and stop letting him speak. They have him lose in nearly every match he’s in and believe it or not, the Nexus was five years ago. I’d really like to see Barrett in a prominent role as a singles wrestler but time keeps ticking and there are just way too many new wrestlers making their way into the company and taking that spot away from him. Barrett’s a good worker and I think he could really help add to a rejuvenating tag division.

As far as who his partner can be, it seems like he has in mind guys whose careers are currently “in the doldrums.” This could potentially mean guys like Curtis Axel, Damien Sandow or Jack Swagger who are all exceptional wrestlers but have fallen into obscurity. This interview from The Sun also points out that Barrett’s current angle with Neville could end up with the two as partners, becoming a modern version of the British Bulldogs. If that’s the case, you can sign me up! I think Neville and Barrett could give the New Day a run for their money.

Another reason why I really like the idea of Barrett in the tag division is because the New Day are so dominant, I can’t see any other tag team the WWE currently has (aside from the Dudley Boyz) that can hang with the New Day in a main event type angle. A guy like Barrett has been there before and can, I think, be a believable opponent for the loud mouth, overly positive, trumpet playing trio.
