The John Report: WWE Smackdown 10/30/20 Review
Welcome to this week’s WWE Smackdown review one day before Halloween. Some of you may be reading this on Saturday, so it’s already Halloween. Anyway, this show is a follow up to the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view from this past Sunday. The big news on the Smackdown side of things is that Sasha Banks became the Smackdown Women’s Champion by ending the long title reign of Bayley, who was champion for over one year. Roman Reigns retained his Universal Title against cousin Jey Uso, who now has to fall in line to the “Tribal Chief” and follow Roman’s orders from now on. Also, poor Otis lost his Money in the Bank contract to The Miz after tag team partner Tucker turned on him. Survivor Series is next on PPV calendar on November 22 with several Raw vs. Smackdown matches lined up. Going into this Smackdown, WWE advertised Daniel Bryan vs. Jey Uso and Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler in Survivor Series qualifying matches.

The show began with a shot of the WWE ThunderDome at the Amway Center. Michael Cole said that the ThunderDome is “award-winning” and “critically acclaimed” so congrats on whatever award they won. Anyway, Roman Reigns made his entrance as the Universal Champion with Paul Heyman joining him. Jey Uso was already in the ring as we got Hell in a Cell highlights.
The Universal Championship match at Hell in a Cell was a win for Reigns in the “I Quit” match after he choked out Jimmy Uso and Jey quit at that point to save his brother. The loss means that Jey must do what Roman tells him to do now.
Let’s Hear from Roman Reigns
Heyman tried to speak, but Jey took the microphone from him. Jey told Reigns that he did not beat him. Jey said Reigns knew that Jey wasn’t going to quit and he didn’t care how hard Roman beat him. Reigns said you can make all the excuses you want and feel how you want, but Roman said that he was going to make him quit and Jey quit. Reigns told Jey to accept the membership and fall in line. Jey said that that’s the bull with Reigns trying to one-up him when he was a kid. Jey said he doesn’t respect Roman while adding that this title has him tripping, which means losing his mind. Jey said that Roman used the only person in the world that he would say “I Quit” for and said that Roman knew what he was doing. Roman said of course he knew what he was doing. Reigns said that these are the things you have to do to have this title. Reigns said that this is the burden of being the face of WWE.
Reigns said that the consequences are real. Reigns said that you saw his dad and uncle are behind him, so they all back him. Reigns told Jey to fall in line or his ass is out of the family. Reigns said he would be livid too. Reigns asked Jey what was he going to do about it? Reigns said that Jey probably wants to bash his skull in, but what can you do? Jey: “I hate you! Why you gotta do me like that?” Reigns told Jey that he loved him and said that by the end of the night, Jey will fall in line. Reigns left while Jey was emotional and in tears in the ring.
Analysis: They both did great here. Reigns is performing at such a high level right now. Reigns is the cold, calculating heel that makes every word count. Jey was awesome as the guy that was reluctant to “fall in line” like Roman wants, which makes Jey likable to the fans and also defiant in the eye of his cousin…at least for now. Jey saying he hates Roman hurts Jey because he loves his cousin, but not this version of Roman and that’s what the story is all about. It’s easy to follow. The “by the end of the night” line suggests Jey doing something Roman wants when Jey faces Daniel Bryan later in the show, so it keeps the fans tuned in.
Kevin Owens faces Dolph Ziggler in a Survivor Series qualifying match up next.

A video aired about WWE’s fight against breast cancer for October since it’s breast cancer awareness month.
Kevin Owens made his entrance first followed by Dolph Ziggler with Robert Roode. The announce team is Michael Cole and Corey Graves as usual.
Survivor Series Qualifying Match: Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler (w/Robert Roode)
Owens with a shoulder tackle, Ziggler bailed to the floor and got back in with a cheap kick to knock Owens down. Ziggler hit a neckbreaker for two. Ziggler ran the ropes right into an elbow to the chest from Owens. Ziggler with a kick to the knee, Owens held onto the ropes and Ziggler sent Owens to the floor. Ziggler distracted the referee, so Roode hit Owens in the back with a forearm to the back. Roode sent Owens into the ring, the referee saw that and ejected Roode from ringside.

The show returned with Ziggler grounding Owens in an armbar and when Owens broke out of that, Ziggler hit a neckbreaker. Ziggler did some blatant eye-gouging for a few seconds. Owens came back with a chop, then punches and Owens hit an atomic drop followed by a clothesline. Owens with a running senton splash. Owens sent Ziggler out of the ring, Ziggler back in, Owens had Ziggler on the back and slammed him down for a two count. Owens went for a Senton Bomb off the top, he jumped off and Ziggler got the knees up to block. Owens hit a superkick before Ziggler could hit his, then Owens went for a Popup Powerbomb, but Ziggler hit a Fameasser for two. That was an awesome counter. They exchanged nearfalls with various pin attempts, Owens hit a kick to the gut and the Stunner connected for the pinfall win. This match went about 11 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Kevin Owens
The win by Owens means he’s on Team Smackdown at Survivor Series.
Analysis: ***1/4 That was a really good match with a lot of nearfalls for both guys. The spot of the match was when Owens launched Ziggler in the air for a Popup Powerbomb and Ziggler countered it into a Fameasser, which looked so cool. I don’t remember seeing anything like that before. Owens getting the win was the right call because I think he’s a guy Smackdown needs to utilize more. Ziggler is fine in his spot teaming with Roode or being used in singles. They are two talented veteran wrestlers that know how to put on a good match. No doubt about it.
Owens went over to Cole and spoke into his headset saying Smackdown is going to become the KO Show – just watch Survivor Series.
Analysis: I hope he’s right. I’m all for a Kevin Owens babyface push.
There was a video package (sponsored by Progressive) about Daniel Bryan because he’s facing Jey Uso later in the show. Good stuff as usual.

There was a backstage scene with Natalya talking to WWE Official Adam Pearce as she suggested that she should be team captain for the women’s team at Survivor Series. Billie Kay showed up with a headshot of herself on a paper, Natalya told her that she was the best and Bianca Belair thought she should be on the team. Natalya clapped in her face saying she was the “Best of All Time” and Belair laughed about it. Pearce suggested a triple threat match where the winner of that match gets to be on the women’s team at Survivor Series.
Analysis: A simple segment to set up a match. It would be nice if WWE’s officials were more organized and had plans for this stuff before the women talk to him about it, but this is the way that WWE has booked these kinds of segments for about 20 years.
They showed a video where Lars Sullivan was interviewed by Corey Graves. Lars said it would be considerate of Graves to call him Lars and mentioned “The Freak” name. Lars mentioned being ostracized from society because he was a Freak. Sullivan said he remembered the first time he was called The Freak at 9 or 10 years old when these two brothers were dancing and singing “Freak Show, Freak Show, everybody look at the Freak Show.” Nobody helped him, so Lars cried. Sullivan said he was hoping that they would show some kindness, he was hoping they would stop and they laughed at him. Sullivan said that everybody just stood there and they laughed at him. Sullivan laughed while telling a story saying that the laughing stopped, but the screaming continued for hours and he wasn’t allowed back at school after that. Sullivan said he hoped to accomplish a lifetime of pain and humiliation on anybody that gets in his way. Sullivan wanted to make this world his personal playground and his personal hell on Earth. That was the end.
Analysis: It wasn’t very good, but it got the point across. That was weird and I’m surprised I wrote as many details as I did, but the nice thing is that Lars speaks really slowly. It’s easy to write it out while he speaks. Anyway, it sounds like they are pushing “The Freak” name a lot and booking him as a heel that was tormented when he was younger, so that’s why he acts this way now. Classic monster heel storytelling.

PLUG TIME: Check out my NXT Halloween Havoc review right here. That was posted on Thursday morning. I thought it was the best wrestling show out of everything over the past week. Strong matches all night, plus a big heel turn too…I wrote a review of the NXT UK Championship match between WALTER and Ilya Dragunov because it was an incredible performance from both guys. It really was one of the best matches of the year in WWE and also one of the most physical matches I’ve ever seen in WWE. They beat the shit out of eachother for our enjoyment. I was really impressed by both men…Please check out the special section on TJRWrestling where I have a listing of every WWE PPV that I have reviewed listed in order by the date it took place. As you can see there, I have reviewed a lot of WWE PPVs over the years and it is always being updated. Earlier in the week, I posted a review of In Your 5: Seasons Beatings with Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog in a great match in the main event while the rest of the card was pretty bad. It was the night when Hunter Hearst Helmsley won a Hog Pen Match against Henry O. Godwinn too. I’m hoping to get the next retro review done in a few days, so keep checking TJRWrestling.net daily to see when they get posted.
They showed some Twitter photos from actor/TV host Mario Lopez and his family dressing up like WWE superstars.
There was a backstage scene with Aalyah Mysterio talking to Murphy. She said her mom understood her while noting that her father and brother don’t want to listen when she talks about him. Murphy said he’s not the same person that he was. Murphy told Aalyah he has to apologize, Aalyah asked if he really wanted to and Murphy said he needs to.
The entrances of Billie Kay and Natalya were next.
Survivor Series Qualifying Match: Natalya vs. Bianca Belair vs. Billie Kay
Natalya with a hard shot to Belair’s face after Kay moved. Belair decked Natalya with a shoulder tackle. Kay back in with a rollup on Belair. Natalya with a discus clothesline on Belair and Kay sent Natalya out of the ring leading to a two count for Kay on Belair. Kay with a headscissors on Kay, Natalya with a suplex and then Belair with a basement dropkick. Belair bounced off the ropes with a standing moonsault and Natalya broke up the pin with a dropkick. Natalya slammed Belair off the ropes, Natalya stepped on the back and a dropkick. Natalya slapped on the Sharpshooter on Belair in the ring and Kay slapped on a chinlock on Kay at the same time. Natalya let go, grabbed a hold of Kay, Belair had Natalya in a headlock and Kay managed to break free with a running boot to the face of Belair while Natalya bumped as well. Kay got nearfalls on both women. Natalya slapped on the Sharpshooter on Kay in the middle of the ring and there was Belair to send Natalya into the ring post. Kay with a pin attempt using the ropes for two. Belair came back with the KOD (Kiss of Death) slam off the shoulders for the pinfall on Kay after about five minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Bianca Belair
The win means Bianca Belair is on Team Smackdown at Survivor Series.
Analysis: ** It was fine for a shorter match with Belair as the obvious winner since she’s a star on the rise. I liked the Sharpshooter spot by Natalya with Kay trying to steal the submission for herself. They did well for the time given. I was hoping Natalya would be on the Smackdown team, but I’m not sure if she will be now.
Carmella was featured in a video backstage saying she is “that woman” that calls the shots, gives the orders and makes her own rules. Carmella said she’ll do whatever it takes to get ahead because no matter what, she always wins. Carmella said next week the entire world will know why she’s untouchable.
Analysis: I assume that means Carmella will be in a match that she’ll probably win to be a part of the Survivor Series team.
Murphy walked out to the ring for a promo with Aalyah Mysterio and they were arm in arm as the show went to break.

They showed a breast cancer survivor named Chelsea that was on the ThunderDome screens.
Let’s Hear from Murphy with Aalyah Mysterio
Murphy stood in the ring staring at the hard camera with Aalyah Mysterio by his side. Murphy said he understood why Rey and Dominik Mysterio don’t trust him, but he is a changed man. Murphy asked them to come out there. There was no response. Murphy said he was begging them to get out there because he needs to apologize for what he’s done to them.
Seth Rollins showed up to confront his former disciple. Rollins said that he hated to come out there and tell you this, but the truth is Murphy knows what Seth has to say. Rollins said that Rey and Dominik are never going to forgive Murphy or accept Murphy as he is. Rollins said that they will never accept whatever is going on between Murphy and Aalyah.
Rollins got in the ring saying that even though Rey and Dominik won’t accept Murphy, Seth will accept Murphy. Rollins said he’ll accept Murphy, he’ll forgive Murphy, but Rollins will also embrace this relationship that Murphy has with Aalyah. Rollins said that there’s a place for all of them in the greater good while telling Murphy and Aalyah that he accepts them. Rollins assured them that he was not the bad guy in this situation because her father Rey has forced Seth’s hand. Rollins said that Rey was being overprotective and controlling Aalyah by telling her who she can talk to. Rollins said that Dominik has become a coward that has seen Aalyah get all this attention and there’s Dominik in the ring.
Dominik went after Rollins with punches, then Murphy broke up the fight and Dominik shoved Murphy. Rollins went to the back. Dominik and Murphy got into a brawl, which led to Rey going out there to try to break it up. Dominik tripped up Murphy against the ropes, Rey went for a 619 kick, but Aalyah stood in front of her father Rey. Aalyah told Rey: “I love him.” She was speaking of Murphy. Rey asked her to say it again and Aalyah said it again: “I love him.” Rey and Dominik left the ring. Aalyah and Murphy kissed in the ring. Rollins was watching from the ramp and had this “oh shit” look on his face with a grin. Rey and Dominik were angry about the kiss that they saw. They went to the back while Aalyah hugged Murphy in the ring as if to show that she felt safe with him.
Analysis: There was a lot there in about eight minutes. Rey and Dominik can’t accept Murphy yet even though he seems like a good guy now while Rollins is still going to try to manipulate Murphy as well as others. The “in love” thing feels like it is rushed, but that’s a pro wrestling storyline. The first kiss is also a big deal in the relationship, I guess. I wonder if this storyline is interesting to a younger demographic. It’s a bit cheesy at times for sure, but I can see why WWE is doing it because it’s based on Rey’s family. There are a lot of twists and turns for this Aalyah/Murphy storyline. Murphy can be a face now, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Aalyah turn heel on her father Rey and brother Dominik. The story is going to go on forever! I’m kidding, I think.
Daniel Bryan was shown warming up backstage with Kayla Braxton interviewing him. Bryan talked about how Jey Uso has taken Jey to the limit for the last two months. Bryan said that Roman hasn’t been able to beat Jey, so he expects the best of Jey and Bryan noted that this match is a good thing for Smackdown.
The Street Profits, the Smackdown Tag Team Champions, made their entrance that included a lot of red solo cups being shot into the air.

The Street Profits duo of Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins talked about their respect for New Day. They spoke about how while New Day are one of the best tag teams of all-time, they aren’t about Booty O’s or pancakes – they are serving Ls (losses). Ford said that they are the best of the best and they want the smoke.
Analysis: That Street Profits vs. New Day match should be awesome. I would like to see Street Profits win to try to make them look like bigger stars, but it doesn’t matter that much who wins. That’s an issue with Survivor Series. No title matches and nothing on the line.
The Street Profits (Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins) vs. Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura
This is not a title match. Dawkins started with Cesaro, Ford tagged in with an impressive dropkick and Dawkins slammed Ford onto Cesaro for a two count as Nakamura broke up the pin. Dawkins and Nakamura were knocked out of the ring. Ford with a blockbuster neckbreaker on Cesaro. Ford with a somersault dive over the top onto Nakamura on the floor. Ford charged at Cesaro on the floor, so Cesaro lifted him and Ford went over the barricade into the crowd near the screens. That was a cool spot. Hopefully some padding for the landing there.

The match continued with Cesaro grounding Ford in an armbar, Nakamura tagged in with a kick to the gut leading to a Cesaro suplex for two. Dawkins got the hot tag against Cesaro with clotheslines, an elbow smash, a flapjack, the spinning corner splash and a running bulldog for a two count. Dawkins with an overhead suplex on Cesaro. Ford was taken out while on the apron. Nakamura was legal for his team with a spin kick on Dawkins followed by a running knee to the ribs for a two count. Cesaro tagged back in, Nakamura with a jumping knee and Cesaro hit a gutwrench powerbomb for two with Ford breaking up the pin. Nakamura sent Ford’s foot into Cesaro’s boot. Dawkins with a rollup for two, but then Cesaro hit a spinning clothesline for two. Dawkins shoved Cesaro into Nakamura on the turnbuckle and hit a sitout spinebuster. Dawkins with a superplex on Nakamura leading to Ford hitting a huge Frog Splash on Nakamura for the pinfall win after about 10 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The Street Profits (Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins)
Analysis: *** An entertaining match with a strong finish. Both teams had a lot of energy, they worked well together and it’s nice to see champions retain in a non-title match. That finishing Frog Splash by Montez Ford is so impressive because he gets so much height and it looks very impactful when he lands. Dawkins impressed me with his offense after the hot tag and I think he’s really doing the best work of his career. Hopefully Cesaro/Nakamura get a chance to do something different soon.
Post match, Ford was grabbing his ribs to sell an injury after he hit the big Frog Splash to win.
Sami Zayn did a promo as the Intercontinental Champion that was the champion of the people that is loved and adored by people all over every continent. Zayn said that he represents the people of every country. Zayn told US Champion Bobby Lashley that he represents one country, but let’s not get into it. Zayn said that the Intercontinental Champion is greater than the US Champion. Corey Graves said that it was true.
Analysis: It’s tough to do promos when it’s heel vs. heel like Zayn vs. Lashley and Lashley isn’t on Smackdown to try to build the story. I wonder if one of them loses the title before Survivor Series, but I don’t know who that would be. Anyway, yes it’s true that the IC Title represents more countries than the US Title, so Sami is factually correct.
Sasha Banks entered with the Smackdown Women’s Title and the steel chair that was used inside Hell in Cell.

This week on Talking Smack the guests are Street Profits, Bayley, Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio. The hosts are Kayla Braxton and Sami Zayn, who is hilarious as a host.
Let’s Hear from Sasha Banks
Sasha Banks talked about she beat Bayley for the Smackdown Women’s Title at Hell in a Cell. Banks mentioned how they were best friends that were going to take over this company, but when Bayley took the chair to try to end Sasha’s career, Banks realized she is The Boss of Friday Nights. That means she is the brand new Smackdown Women’s Champion. Banks said that now that Bayley is in her past, Banks gets to go one on one with Asuka (at Survivor Series) and Banks will prove that she is the best of the best. The Survivor Series tagline is “Best of the Best” so there’s Banks saying it in her promo.
Bayley walked out there with her “Role Model” shirt. Bayley said that the world knows Banks can win a championship, but she can’t hold onto it unlike Bayley as the champion for 380 days. Bayley complained about Banks taking her steel chair. Bayley said that Banks forced Bayley to sign the Hell in a Cell contract under duress. Bayley said that what they all know is that Banks can’t beat Asuka without Bayley in her corner. Bayley challenged Banks to a match for the Smackdown Women’s Championship and she wants Banks to enjoy her short title reign. Bayley said “ding dong, trick or treat, it ends.”
Banks told Bayley to bring all that she’s got “because backstabbing bitches never win.” Banks held up the title over her head as Bayley stared at her.
Analysis: The rematch should be very good like the Hell in a Cell match was. I thought their HIAC match was the best match on that show, so as long as they get a decent amount of time they’ll deliver again. I liked the personal nature of the promos.
A video aired about all of The Undertaker programming on WWE Network over the next month since it’s 30 Years of The Undertaker in November.
Daniel Bryan entered for the main event. It’s his first singles match in about four months.

Survivor Series Qualifying Match: Daniel Bryan vs. Jey Uso
Jey was in control early with a body slam. Bryan with uppercuts and then a running knee to the ribs. Bryan wrenched on the arm, Jey sent Bryan into the ropes and Jey hit a Samoan Drop. There was no cover attempt from Jey, who looked shaken because of the exchange with Roman Reigns earlier in the night. Jey stomped on Bryan, then Bryan did the backflip off the ropes leading to the running clothesline. Bryan worked over Jey with the Yes Kicks to the body, which led to Jey bailing to the floor. That led to the entrance of Universal Champion Roman Reigns with Paul Heyman as the show went to break.

They battled against the turnbuckle with Bryan hitting a running dropkick while Jey was upside down. Bryan went for a suplex off the top, Jey landed on top for two and then Bryan got a two count of his own. Jey with a spin kick, Bryan gave him back body drop over the top to the floor and Jey hit a superkick to block Bryan’s suicide dive attempt. Jey went for an Uso Splash off the top, Bryan got the knees up and Bryan slapped on the LeBell Lock (Yes Lock) with Jey getting his hand on the bottom rope to break the hold. Bryan with kicks to the ribs followed by the running corner dropkick. When Bryan ran again, Jey hit a superkick and then another superkick. Jey went up top and hit the Uso Splash for the pinfall win after ten minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Jey Uso
The win means that Jey Uso is on Team Smackdown at Survivor Series.
Analysis: ***1/4 A clean win in a back and forth match with Jey being a lot more aggressive than usual. That was done to show that Reigns has pushed him over the edge to becoming a more dangerous wrestler with Bryan in there to put him over. I’m not surprised by the result although I admit that going into the match I thought they might have Bryan win and then Jey beats him up after the match. Instead, Jey won clean. Obviously what they did after the match should set up a rematch soon.
After the match, Reigns went into the ring. Jey said he was with him and that Roman was the head of the table. Reigns stared at Bryan, who was getting to his knees. Reigns looked at Bryan, so Jey hit a superkick on Bryan. Jey went up top and hit another Uso Splash on Bryan. Jey told his cousin Reigns: “I understand now! I love you too!” Reigns told Jey to make Bryan understand how much Jey loves Reigns.
Jey beat on Bryan with punches to the head with Jey saying that he understands now. Jey whipped Bryan into the steel steps. Jey cleared off the announce table. Jey beat on Bryan and put him on the announce table. Jey went up top and jumped off with an Uso Splash where he put Bryan through the table. Jey jumped far and hit the edge of the table a bit, but the spot worked. Jey rammed Bryans’ head into the table repeatedly. Reigns had an evil grin on his face as he left the ring and Jey kept on saying that he understands. The camera focused on Reigns with the grin on his face and that was the end of the show.
Analysis: That was interesting and I thought Bryan putting over Jey in this way is huge for Jey. I thought they might do something like that, but I figured it would be more like Reigns making Jey do it with Jey being reluctant. Instead, Jey seemed to embrace while Reigns was apparently pleased by it judging by his facial expressions. The Uso Splash from Jey was a big leap. I was a bit concerned that Bryan was too far away although to Jey’s credit he was able to hit enough of it to make it look impressive. If you want to nitpick you can point out that nobody helped Bryan for five minutes after a match was over, but it’s WWE where sometimes they do that to get the point across. Putting Bryan in the spot of the babyface getting his ass kicked is interesting although it does set up the potential rematch with Jey along with Bryan possibly going after Roman’s title in the next few months. Reigns will probably beat Bryan if that happens, but it’s a quality opponent for Reigns to face on the road to WrestleMania. I really like how this storyline is going. They aren’t rushing things and that’s a big reason why it’s working so well.
Here’s a post-show stretcher job from Bryan with Jey attacking Bryan again. Enjoy the vacation (or time at home with the family) for a few weeks. I could use a vacation.

Final Thoughts
This was a good show as usual from Smackdown. There were three matches that were above average with Kevin Owens and Street Profits picking up wins in competitive matches. The women’s match was shorter, but they made the most of their time with Bianca Belair picking up a big win. I really liked the Roman Reigns/Jey Uso at the start of the show leading to the main event with Daniel Bryan losing to Jey and it appears as though Jey is content in working with Reigns, but that could change. The story is progressing at a slow pace, which is exactly how it should go.
The Mysterio family drama continued with Aalyah telling her father Rey that she loves Murphy and she even got to kiss Murphy in the ring. Maybe this leads to her turning on Rey/Dominik or maybe the family accepts Murphy. I don’t know, but there’s a lot of ways it can go. I’m sure some viewers like the family drama a lot. As for the Lars Sullivan interview, I don’t think it was very good by any means, but at least it was some character development to show that he’s a guy that was laughed at as a kid, so that’s why he’s all angry now.
