The John Report: AEW Dynamite 11/11/20 Review

Welcome to another AEW Dynamite review here on TJRWrestling. This show is a follow up to the AEW Full Gear PPV from this past Saturday, which was an awesome show that I liked a lot since I rated it 9 out of 10 while calling it the best AEW PPV of the year. Check out my AEW Full Gear review right here in case you missed it. The next AEW PPV is Revolution on Saturday, February 27th, so there’s a lot of time before that. They will likely have some bigger than usual episodes of Dynamite in the months ahead. The two main title changes at Full Gear were Darby Allin becoming the TNT Champion and The Young Bucks, those plucky Executive Vice Presidents, became AEW Tag Team Champions for the first time.

This is episode #58 of AEW Dynamite from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, FL. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. Here’s my AEW Dynamite TV review archive. Let’s get to it.

The show with a message from AEW saying Happy Veterans Day. The AEW intro video played after that. It looks new. There were reports of there being rain in Jacksonville, but it wasn’t raining hard when they went live.

Taz did a promo while his guy Brian Cage was in the ring. Ricky Starks joined Taz on the stage. Taz pointed out TNT Champion Darby Allin sitting in the crowd with the TNT Title on his shoulder. Taz warned Allin to stay in that chair and not get near them. Taz said that the same thing goes for Cody Rhodes if he gets near Team Taz. The promo continued with Taz saying that Matt Sydal is no joke because just like Allin has beaten a big star like Cody Rhodes, Sydal has a victory over Chris Jericho in his career as well. Taz joined the announce team of Jim Ross, Excalibur and Tony Schiavone for this match.

Brian Cage (w/Ricky Starks) vs. Matt Sydal

Sydal is the former Evan Bourne in WWE that has wrestled a few times for AEW. Sydal with a kick to the back that sent Cage into the turnbuckle and then a running dropkick. Cage came back with repeated corner clotheslines and a hard whip into the turnbuckle. Cage with a throw across the ring. Sydal with kicks, but Cage came back with a hiptoss into a backbreaker. Cage with another hard whip into the turnbuckle. I missed about a minute because of a technical issue, but Cage was still in control as he pulled back on the arms of Sydal. There was a comeback from Sydal with a kick to the chest, then Cage with another clothesline and a jumping kick. Sydal landed on his feet for a German Suplex attempt and Sydal managed to hit a Powerbomb on the bigger man. Sydal jumped off the top rope with the Meteora double knees onto Cage on the ramp. Sydal was on the top, Cage got back up, blocked a kick and Sydal hit three kicks to stun the big man. Sydal hit a neckbreaker into a slam for two. Sydal with a twisting splash for two. They did a sequence where they each avoided moves, Sydal with another kick to the head, but Cage came back with a clothesline. Sydal reversed a Powerbomb into a hurricanrana pin for a two count that was very close. Sydal with a jumping knee to the face. Sydal jumped off the top, Cage caught him on the shoulder and hit the Drillclaw slam for the pinfall win after eight minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Brian Cage

Analysis: *** A pretty good match with Sydal getting a lot of offense for a few minutes, but then it took one counter from Cage leading to the finisher for the win. I was a bit surprised that Sydal got as much offense as he did, but it’s not like that is a bad thing. Cage winning was the obvious result here.

Brian Cage and Matt Sydal Go to War! | AEW Dynamite, 11/11/20

Post match, Ricky Starks said that win by Cage was incredible. Starks said that they are officially ranked, so they get things done. Starks said they are going after the TNT Championship while saying that their presence will be felt and the revolution will be televised.

The announcers hyped up what’s coming up this week. They have some newer graphics.

Let’s Hear from Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes made his entrance without the 27 people in his group that he has. He was in a suit without the TNT Title, which he lost to Darby Allin at Full Gear.

Cody commented that it seems like they are having a bit of weather, then asked if they are okay and the fans cheered. It wasn’t raining. Cody said let’s congratulate the new TNT Champion Darby Allin, which led to some applause. Cody said that Arn Anderson and himself will not be seeking a rematch at this time. Cody said that there’s another loss on his record that he’d love to have expunged and vindicated. There was a woman that walked into the ring with him. Cody mentioned wanting to face MJF.

The woman was a black woman with blonde hair and she wondered how Cody can lie to our prestigious AEW audience. She said her name is Jade Cargill and she’s the total package. Jane said that she has been sitting on the sideline week after week studying her competition. Jane went over Cody’s nicknames, then said that she heard him saying he was a Giant Killer and said there is nothing giant about him. Jade said she knows a giant, a real giant and statements like Cody’s are loud enough to wake him. Jade told Cody the next time Cody wants to think out loud, she suggests he keeps that shit to himself. Jade told Cody to watch his back and said that she is nothing to be played with. Jane was on the stage now and she congratulated Cody on his name. Jane said that she guesses that Cody didn’t have the balls to go by one name. Jade said that the giant is a real star and you know what his name is…Shaq. It was mentioned by Excalibur that Shaquille O’Neal was at Full Gear and I saw him in the Being The Elite video, so that is true.

Brandy Rhodes showed up defending her husband Cody by getting in Jade’s face. Brandi said that this bitch is flapping her gums at her man. Brandi told Jade to get her ratchet, trifling ass off her stage unless she sends for her. Brandi said: “Bitch, get your ass out of here.” Brandi turned her back, Jade tapped her on her ass and Brandi yelled at Jane again. Jerry Lynn showed up to break it up as the girls went to the back.

Analysis: That was pretty wild with Brandi getting fired up by standing up to Jade and yelling at her with some colorful language. I thought Brandi did awesome there. The interruption by Jane was a surprise because I have no idea who she is, but she was given this chance to do a promo in the ring with a top guy like Cody. The mention of Shaq could be a big thing for AEW if they can get the NBA Hall of Famer (and current NBA on TNT broadcaster) to work a match for the company. Anyway, Cody mentioning that he wanted to face MJF again is interesting too, so we’ll see if that’s the direction for him.

Brandi Explodes on Jade! Listen to What She had to Say | AEW Dynamite, 11/11/20

Brian Cage went into the ring with an attack from behind. He hit a Powerbomb on Cody as Ricky Starks joined him in the ring. Darby Allin went into the ring, he hit a diving attack on Starks (while wearing a thumbtack jacket) and a running attack with the thumbtack jacket on Cage. Willie Hobbs ran out to the ring to join Cody and Darby in the ring.

Analysis: It’s setting up an obvious tag team match. The fact that Hobbs showed up late makes me think he might be going heel to join Team Taz, but I don’t know that. It just feels that way based on when he showed up.

(Commercial)

There were highlights shown of Kenny Omega beating Adam Page at Full Gear.

Jon Moxley was interviewed backstage by Alex Marvez. There were audio issues because everything that both of them were saying was echoed. Moxley said he’ll never quit as the AEW World Champion no matter what challenge lays ahead. Moxley said that he’s danced with Kenny Omega before, he’s beaten him once and Moxley said he’s the greatest pro wrestler on the planet right now. Moxley said if anybody can beat Kenny Omega twice it’s him.

Analysis: The audio issues made it tough to listen to the promo. They didn’t turn off the sound in the arena, so it made it sound like there was an echo instead of a regular promo.

It was announced that AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defends the title against Kenny Omega on Dynamite on December 2.

Analysis: I think Omega will win the AEW World Title that night.

Bunkhouse Match: The Butcher and The Blade (w/The Bunny) vs. Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall)

There are no rules in this match and it’s Tornado Rules, so all four guys are legal in the match. Butcher battled Dustin on the floor with Dustin hitting a front suplex onto a chair. Dustin and Marshall each punched Blade repeatedly and Dustin hit a clothesline. Blade got a guitar and smashed it over the head of Marshall. Dustin brought in a bullrope that had a cowbell on it. Butcher charged with a chair and hit Dustin in the head with the chair. Marshall was bladed, so there was blood all over his face after the guitar shot to the head. It was a guitar on the top of the head, yet it was able to cut open his forehead. Bunny handcuffed Dustin to the rope, so he couldn’t move. That led to a break.

(Commercial – Butcher and Blade continued to dominate during the Picture in Picture action.)

Butcher and Blade were standing tall in the ring while Marshall was on the floor and Dustin was free from the handcuffs as he hit a double clothesline. Dustin with a ladder to the ribs of Butcher and a ladder to the face of Blade. Butcher hit the ladder with a chair to send Dustin out of the ring. They were brawling on the floor with kendo stick shots to the back. Excalibur explained that the handcuff broke when Dustin was knocked off the apron. Butcher went brawling with Dustin by a back part of the arena, Marshall sprayed Butcher with a fire extinguisher and then Dustin hit Butcher with a bulldog off the stage through some plywood and probably some padding underneath that. Back in the ring, Blade did a blade job and he was bleeding profusely from the head. Marshall with a knockdown leading to trash can lid to the head. Marshall set up a huge ladder, the referee Paul Turner was nice enough to hold it to keep his balance and Marshall hit an elbow drop off the 10-foot-high ladder for a two count. Blade was bleeding a lot more than Marshall was at this point. Butcher was back in the ring before Dustin with a powerslam on Marshall. Dustin with a powerslam on Blade. Dustin went for a sunset flip bomb, but it didn’t look good and it was more like a regular sunset flip. Blade knocked down Dustin with chain to the chest. Bunny tossed in some weapons to her husband Blade, who was a bloody mess. Butcher and Blade hit a double team powerbomb/neckbreaker through chairs, but Marshall made the save. Blade with a clothesline on Marshall. QT hit a Diamond Cutter using the chain as an assist and Blade hit a low blow kick on Marshall. Bunny was on the apron and Blade accidentally knocked her off the apron through the table. The director missed the bump. That’s poor. Dustin hit a cowbell to the face of Blade and Marshall hit a Diamond Cutter for the pinfall win after about 13 minutes. They showed Bunny’s bump on the replay.

Winners by pinfall: Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall)

Analysis: ***1/4 This was okay as a bloody brawl with a lot of weapons being used. It’s not like this rivalry ever felt like a big deal to me as somebody that watches every episode of Dynamite. They had some angles on Dark, which I don’t watch, so it feels like AEW is trying to make us care about something that they barely feature on their main show. Anyway, the work in the match was good although I think the spot on the plywood was a bit silly because the guy that was put through the plywood (Butcher) was back in the match before Dustin was. What’s the point of a spot if it has no impact? Anyway, it was the right call for the faces to win.

The Bunkhouse Match Lives Up to the Hype! | AEW Dynamite, 11/11/20

There was a video showing highlights of Full Gear when Matt Hardy beat Sammy Guevara in an Elite Deletion match. Matt spoke about how this was one of the most painful rivalries of his career. Matt said that Sammy lost this rivalry to an iconic wrestler like Matt Hardy, he said Sammy will become a bigger star because of it and don’t squander it.

Analysis: It made sense for Matt to win the feud even though he’s nearly 20 years older than Sammy. It’s not going to hurt Sammy that much.

The Inner Circle segment with MJF joining the group is up next.

(Commercial)

Inner Circle Induction Ceremony

There was a cheesy video about Chris Jericho and MJF for this induction ceremony in the ring. The video was only about 30 seconds.

Chris Jericho made his entrance as his song “Judas” played in the building with the fans singing along with the “Demo God” for his entrance. Jericho stood behind a podium that was in the ring as he announced that they are inducting not one, but two members in the Inner Circle group.

Inner Circle group members Santana, Ortiz and Jake Hager made their entrance. There was no sign of Sammy Guevara who lost to Matt Hardy at Full Gear on Saturday. Chris asked where Sammy was, he said he got out of the hospital, but then said that they will worry about Sammy later.

Jericho introduced the two men that will make the Inner Circle even stronger: Wardlow and Maxwell Jacob Friedman. That led to boos from the crowd.

MJF stood at the podium doing some fake crying saying it has taken a long and hard road to get there. MJF said that he’s been in this industry for five long years and when he first started his father gave him a small loan of $1 million, which led to the announcers freaking out and getting mad about it. MJF talked about he had a lot of pressure, but now he’s a diamond that you see today. MJF said that his homeys in Proud & Powerful (Santana and Ortiz) are going to dig this poem. MJF read some poem where he said “That’s All Me” repeatedly.

Ortiz said that was Drake and that MJF shouldn’t be in the Inner Circle. Chris said he knows Ortiz and Sammy don’t want him in the Inner Circle. Chris said that MJF beat Chris to join the group. Chris said that he knows this business better than anything while adding that with MJF’s mind and Wardlow’s muscle they will be stronger than ever. Jericho said that this is the new unstoppable force in AEW and he told Ortiz they will make it work. MJF said he didn’t know who Drake is while adding that he started from the bottom, now he’s here, which is a Drake song. That’s funny.

MJF said that they are also there to celebrate Chris Jericho’s birthday, which was two days earlier with Jericho turning 50 years old. There was some confetti for it. MJF said that next week they’re going to Vegas and it’s all on him. MJF handed Jericho and the Inner Circle guys the tickets for a trip to Vegas. MJF poorly sang “Happy Birthday” and said that they’re going to Vegas. The six men posed together in the ring as Ortiz and Santana didn’t look happy about it while the show went to break.

Analysis: This was fun, but nothing that special either. This whole story is going to be a slow build until MJF turns on Jericho to set up the rivalry with Jericho in the face role. There were some funny moments in there with MJF saying some Drake lyrics, then saying he didn’t know who that is and then doing another Drake lyric after that. Well done. The Vegas thing will be fine, but do you know what’s smarter than going to Vegas? Staying home and avoiding people in the country with the most Coronavirus cases in the world. Just saying. Anyway, get ready for some singing routine next week.

MJF's Induction Into the Inner Circle - What's Next? | AEW Dynamite, 11/11/20

(Commercial)

They showed some highlights of The Young Bucks beating FTR to win the AEW Tag Team Titles at Full Gear this past Saturday. The video featured quotes from people that cover wrestling talking about how great it was. I don’t think it was as great as some people think in terms of being some all-time great match, but I thought it was the best match of the night.

The Young Bucks were interviewed backstage by Alex Marvez. Nick Jackson said that this was the biggest accomplishment of their whole career, but the world wants to see a rematch. Nick Jackson apologized for kicking Alex in the face in the past. Nick said that they are looking for fresh opponents. Matt called out some young tag team called Top Flight, so next week they will face Top Flight will face Young Bucks. Marvez accepted the apology.

Shawn Spears (w/Tully Blanchard) vs. Scorpio Sky

It says Shawn Spears is 15-2 in 2020, which is mostly wins on Dark because I watch Dynamite every week and barely remember him winning matches. Spears wrestles with the black glove on the left hand. Sky with a double chop to the throat and Sky hit a running boot to the face. The announcers talked about a match announced next week, then managed to say “Tony Khan” about five times in twenty seconds. We get it. Tony is the boss that makes the matches. They were back in the ring with Spears hitting a belly to belly suplex off the top leading to a picture in picture break.

(Commercial)

The match returned with Sky missing a missile dropkick when Spears moved. Sky came back with a clothesline that sent them both over the top to the floor. Sky jumped over the top onto Spears on the floor. Back in the ring, Sky jumped over the ropes and hit a Cutter on Spears for two because the Cutter/Stunner is very popular in AEW. Sky jumped off the ring steps with a move, but Spears hit him with a superkick. Spears hit a sidewalk slam onto the top of the steel steps.  Back in the ring, Sky slapped on the Scorpion (or Scorpio) Death Lock submission with Spears getting to the ropes. Blanchard put some item over to the turnbuckle, then Tully distracted the referee, Spears put the “slug” on his left black glove, Sky threw an object out of the ring and Spears punched Sky with the loaded glove (the referee was looking at Tully) and Spears covered Sky for the pinfall win after nine minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Shawn Spears

Analysis: **1/2 This was just an average match. A bit slow at times with Sky hitting some cool moves and then Spears taking over after the slam onto the steel steps. A cheap win for the heel with the manager is the right booking because that’s why you have a heel manager out there.

After the match, the referee Bryce Remsburg checked Spears’ hand, but Spears put it in his tights before the referee could see it. Spears was frustrated about the loss.

There was a backstage scene with Dasha supposed to do an interview with Kenny Omega, but there was no sign of Kenny.

They showed Kenny Omega in the parking lot with Alex Marvez talking to him. Omega said he has to step out of his position of being an afterthought and step into becoming the number one contender spot. Omega said that Moxley holds something that he wants and needs. Moxley said he wants to be the man that’s most talked about in all of professional wrestling, which is what people expect from him. Omega said that people wanted the Kenny Omega from New Japan with five, six, seven-star matches and now he’s ready to assume his status as being the best in the world. Omega said that he couldn’t find anything in the records about him having a regular match with Jon Moxley. Omega said Moxley is ready and they know that Kenny is ready. Kenny said he had a flight to catch.

Analysis: The comment about not having a match with Moxley in the past is true in the sense that it was an unsanctioned match when they wrestled last year. They did have a wild match that Moxley won, but it was not

Tay Conti entered with Anna Jay. The introduction said that Red Velvet is “straight out of your mama’s kitchen” and Brandi Rhodes joins her at ringside.

Tay Conti (w/Anna Jay) vs. Red Velvet (w/Brandi Rhodes)

They exchanged arm drags as they looked like they were going through a training routine. Velvet with a kick to the face followed by a standing moonsault. Conti with three judo throws along with a kick to the back for a two count.

(Commercial)

The picture in picture ended with Velvet hitting two clotheslines, a back elbow and a bulldog spot that Rey Mysterio loves to do. Velvet with a double knee to spine across the ropes. Velvet did a very weak whip into the ropes where Conti had to jog across the ring in a fake manner. It looked amateurish. Anyway, Velvet hit a Stunner because I think every AEW match has to have a Cutter or a Stunner at this point. It only got a two count. Conti and Velvet kicked eachother in the head at the same time. Jay slid a chair to Conti, who kicked it out of the ring because the referee was there and Velvet hit a leg lariat for two. Velvet missed a boot to the side of the head, which looked weird just how Conti avoided it. Conti with a pump kick to the face followed by a Gory special into a knee for the pinfall win after eight minutes. Post match, the announcers did the “great athletes” spiel they always do.

Winner by pinfall: Tay Conti

Analysis: *1/2 It was a boring match that wasn’t interesting at all although the last few minutes were okay. Both women are very good looking, but the action in the match was below what you expect in a pro wrestling television in 2020. Conti and Velvet both have a lot of potential. It’s just hard to get into random matches put on Dynamite with no storyline. I’m not sure why Britt Baker isn’t being featured more in the women’s division. She’s the best female talent they have.

Post match, Jay didn’t seem happy about Conti refusing to use the chair with Conti trying to explain it to her.

The Inner Circle were interviewed by Alex Marvez with Chris Jericho talking about going to Vegas and MJF saying it was all on him. Sammy Guevara saying he got an email from MJF saying go to the beach. MJF said he sent Sammy an email to be here. Sammy said he only got one email. Jericho said they’re going to Vegas, so it’s all good. MJF told Sammy he got that second email and he gave Sammy the ticket to Vegas.

Analysis: The problems continue with Sammy not being treated well by MJF, which has been going on for months.

Next week on AEW Dynamite:

* Kip Sabian vs. Orange Cassidy

* Young Bucks vs. Top Flight

* Cody Rhodes and Darby Allin vs. Brian Cage and Ricky Starks

* The Inner Circle “slays” Las Vegas

Eddie Kingston showed up for a promo with fans cheering him, but Eddie said he knew his name and didn’t need people cheering it. Eddie said that at Full Gear, Jon Moxley made him say “I Quit” and unlike you people, he will never stop and he will be the World Champion. Moxley said that being the leader of violent men and women that he is, they are going to have Penta facing his brother Fenix. Eddie said that you’ll see two of the best luchadores ever and all he has to say is “you’re welcome.”

Rey Fenix entered first for the main event.

(Commercial)

Penta El Zero Miedo was up next with Eddie Kingston on commentary. When they wrestled in the World Title Eliminator Tournament, Fenix beat Penta. This is the rematch between the brothers.

Penta El Zero Miedo vs. Rey Fenix

Fenix with a rollup, Penta with a kick, Fenix with a kick and they each hit more kicks to knock eachother down. Fenix jumped up leading to a rollup, Penta came back with a back elbow and Penta got a reverse capture into a rollup for two. Fenix with a headscissors to send Penta out of the ring. Penta sent Fenix over the top to the floor. Penta took a long time to follow, so Fenix with a roll through into a dropkick. Penta with a standing submission grabbing the legs and Penta ripped off part of Fenix’s mask. Excalibur said that it would be a disqualification in Mexico with Kingston saying it was not Mexico while adding they’re brothers bringing out the best in eachother. Penta with a superkick. Penta grabbed a chinlock briefly as they went to picture in picture break.

(Commercial)

The match returned with some chops and Fenix hit a rollup for two. Fenix with a spin kick off the ropes. Fenix with a kick to Penta with Tony saying that Eddie was the one that destroyed this great tag team. Fenix jumped over the top onto the middle rope and hit a hurricanrana for two. Fenix hit a springboard Cutter for a two count. Fenix ripped at Penta’s mask with Eddie complaining about what Fenix was doing to his best friend (Penta) while Eddie claimed that Fenix should be DQ’d for that. Tony was whining about Eddie causing this, so Eddie threatened to slap him. Fenix and Penta exchanged punches, then headbutts and Fenix with a hard slap with Eddie saying he loved this. Penta hit a flipping neckbreaker for a two count. Fenix countered a move with a headscissors to the floor. Fenix ran the roped with a twisting splash over the top onto Penta on the floor. Back in the ring, Fenix hit a Senton Bomb off the top for a two count. Penta brought Fenix to the apron, Penta with a superkick and hit a Package Piledriver on the ring apron, which is the hardest part of the ring as we all know. Eddie agreed with JR that it was a little too much. Penta hit a Canadian Destroyer on the floor. That was brutal. Penta said “zero mieda” meaning no fear and hit another Package Piledriver for the pinfall win after 13 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Penta El Zero Miedo

Analysis: ***3/4 It was an excellent match with some crazy stuff by both guys, but it was the good kind of crazy. Penta getting the win gets him some payback for when Fenix beat Penta recently. Some of the spots towards the end of the match were wild with the moves on the apron and onto the floor. The good thing is that they went to the finish shortly after that because when you do big moves like that, it’s smart to end it that way. I’m actually surprised they didn’t do more dives and high spots. By limiting the amount of those big moves, it makes it feel like a bigger deal when Penta hit those spots on the floor. I assume there will be a third match between the brothers since they have traded wins.

Eddie Kingston did a promo since there were a few minutes left as he said “clap, clap” or whatever you marks do while mentioning the “fight forever” chant. Kingston said that they are two of the best wrestlers in the world and his best friend showed his brother who is boss. Eddie congratulated Penta while kicking Fenix out of the ring. Eddie told Penta he didn’t need that dead weight, he didn’t need his brother and here’s an interruption.

It’s the return of “The Bastard” Pac! Yes! It’s his first appearance since about March. Pac asked Eddie if he thought he would be gone forever. Pac said that The Bastard’s back and Eddie has made a big mistake.

Pac and Kingston were separated by referees and officials. Kingston noted it was the second time that Pac had to step away from wrestling (the other time being when he waited for his WWE contract to end). It was announced by Tony Schiavone via Tony Khan that Pac will face The Blade next week on Dynamite, so that’s an easy win for Pac. It was noted by Excalibur that referees broke it up because Kingston wasn’t cleared to compete. Pac and Kingston were kept apart as the show ended there.

Pac is Back! | AEW Dynamite, 11/11/20

Analysis: Welcome back to Pac, who is one of my favorites in AEW. The story here is that Pac was associated with Penta and Fenix, but now that Kingston is involved with Penta and Fenix as a leader, Pac has an issue with that. I think Pac is one of the best heels in AEW although perhaps for this storyline he might be more of a face. Kingston could work well as a heel due to his story in wrestling being something that is easy to support, but it feels like Kingston is locked in as a heel now. Anyway, I’m just glad that Pac is back in action and I assume he’ll stay in the US rather than go back to England any time soon.

There is some heat on AEW Owner/Booker Tony Khan on Twitter for this tweet.

There really wasn’t anything on the show that shifted the balance of power in wrestling. It’s a silly statement for Tony to make. I realize he’s a promoter whose job it is to get people excited about his product and if you listen to his interviews, he’s very enthusiastic about AEW shows. However, I would avoid bold statements like that unless you are really going to produce something that changes the business, so to speak.

Three Stars of the Show

  1. Penta
  2. Fenix
  3. Dustin Rhodes/QT Marshall

The Scoreboard

This week: 7 (out of 10)

Last week: No rating

2020 Average: 7.17

Final Thoughts

It was a good show for the most part with Penta and Fenix doing crazy shit in the main event in what was an awesome match. I’m really happy to see Pac back. I assume that he’ll stay in the US so that he can appear regularly moving forward. The mention of Shaquille O’Neal by newcomer Jane Cargill to Cody suggests that maybe Shaq is going to work a match for AEW since he was at Full Gear and he’s a part of the NBA on TNT, which is the network that airs Dynamite. Speaking of Jane, that promo by Brandi Rhodes against her was f’n great. Loved the intensity by Brandi there.

The Bunkhouse tag team match was pretty good as a bloody mess, but I don’t think either team is that popular or that important in AEW in the big picture. AEW loves the bloody matches, though. Some of the matches featured rivalries that are featured on Dark, which I don’t watch, so it was hard to get into the whole show. That second hour had some dull moments before the main event. More Inner Circle comedy skits next week in Vegas. Hopefully no singing involved although if I had to bet (and I love Vegas) I would assume there’s some Jericho/MJF singing routine again.

On a final note, I think every match on this show had a Cutter or Stunner. A lot of these wrestlers are children of the 1990s, I guess. They love those moves, but I don’t think those moves should be as common as a clothesline or even a superkick. It’s repetitive when you see it so many times in the same show.
