WWE Star Claims He’s The “Real People’s Champion,” It’s Not The Rock

The Rock WWE Hall Of Fame

A veteran WWE superstar is claiming the “People’s Champion” crown, a moniker The Rock has used for decades.

Throughout his legendary career as a pro wrestler, The Rock has often bragged about being The People’s Champion. It was something he did as a heel to annoy the fans, and then when he did it as a babyface, the fans approved because they loved the man.

The Rock was even presented with Muhammad Ali’s People’s Champion title before WrestleMania 40 to put over the idea that he is a champion of the people. Whether there is a long-term story for that is unknown, but at the time, it fit Rock as “The Final Boss.”

One of the more shocking WWE talent releases in years when the company let R-Truth’s contract expire. Fans were outraged, they chanted his name at shows, complained online, and R-Truth was brought back after a short time. Truth even shaved his head and called himself Ron Killings at times, too.

In an interview with The Rap on Wrestling podcast, R-Truth talked about the various personas that he has brought to WWE.

“You’ve had a serious Truth. What more do you want from me? And listen, let me say this on that — yeah, yeah, we’ve had the serious Truth. Ron ‘The Truth’ Killings. We had the serious Truth with the Little Jimmy. We’ve had the serious Truth. Everybody wants to see me with that WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

And I think that’s when they feel like they’ve seen it — that’s what everybody wants to see. What sold me? What brought the Suntan Superman back? What gave me my championship that’s bigger than any championship I could get at WWE? Over a hundred million people worldwide showed interest, showed empathy, showed concern.”

R-Truth Feels Like He’s The Real People’s Champion, Sorry To The Rock

Due to his close connection with the WWE fans, R-Truth made the point that perhaps he’s the real People’s Champion rather than somebody else like The Rock.

“I am the real definition of the People’s Champ. I don’t need nothing, bro. Yeah. So I think at 53, I’m more popular than I’ve ever been in my life. And I’ve had so many different character changes, so many different levels and layers taken off.

But those hundred million people fell in love and supported that guy that made them feel every feeling they wanted to feel. Why? Hot right now, baby. Why reinvent the wheel, you feel me?”

R-Truth and John Cena had an interesting backstage segment on WWE SmackDown where they basically squashed their beef after Cena had turned heel earlier this year and broken Truth’s heart because of it. The segment was done in a comedic way, which fits Truth’s character.
